FFA Loses Two Active Members

 

 

Lawrence “Larry” L. Roesch

 

           Larry L. Roesch, 84, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, surrounded by family at his home in Iowa City, IA, following a lengthy battle with multiple myeloma. Larry was born July 14, 1918, in Deep River, Iowa, the son of Louis & Paulena Myers Roesch. The family moved to Iowa City in 1923, where Larry graduated from Iowa City High School and worked at People’s Laundry. During World War II, he served for three years in the Army Air Corps at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri, and Agra, India, for two years in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He was a Tech Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Larry was united in marriage to Martha “Marty” Fulbright on October 10, 1943, in St. Louis, Missouri. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa City where he was employed by Thomas Electric for 5 years. Larry helped to open the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in 1952, where he was employed in the engineering department as a service engineer in refrigeration and air conditioning, until his retirement in 1977. Following retirement he worked for Kelly Heating and assisted with funeral service as Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa City for over 50 years, the Masonic Lodge #4 AF AM and the El Kahir and KAABA Shrines. He was a charter member and past commander of China-Burma-India Veterans Association of Iowa and a charter member of Golden K Kiwanis. Larry loved woodworking, furniture restoration, and recaning. He taught a course for two years at the Senior Center in recaning and a course on refrigeration and air conditioning at Kirkwood. Larry is survived by his wife of 59 ˝ years, Martha; one daughter, Gayle Baldridge Royar and her husband Rev. Kenneth Royar; and one son, Gregory Roesch and his wife Jill, all of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Rachael Mayer and her husband Matthew of Kansas City, MO, and Heather Roesch of Iowa City; one great-grandson, Zachary Alan Mayer; one cousin, Robert Myers and his wife Louann of Tifflin, IA; and his grand-dog, Sheri. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth Roesch.

 

Betty C. Fulbright

 

Mrs. Betty Sue Caraway Fulbright, 64, of 2929 Peachtree St., Claremont, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. She was born July 13, 1938, in Burke County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Howard Stokes and Lucy Norman Caraway. She retired from CommScope and was a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Hickory, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Walter Dale Fulbright. Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Bobby Lee Fulbright of the home; a daughter, Judy Fulbright of Catawba; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Wanda Fulbright of Catawba and Michael and Robin Fulbright of Claremont; six grandchildren, Rebecca Fulbright of Maiden, Ronnie Fulbright Jr. and Bradley Fulbright of Catawba, and Amber Fulbright, Brittany Fulbright and Kayla Fulbright of Claremont; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ella Mae and Ned Beck of Connelly Springs, Frankie and Tom Herd of Morganton, Ethel and Robert Hunsicker of Bloomington, IN, and Nora and Fred Poist of Burke, VA; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Patsy Caraway and Doug and Becky Caraway of Morganton and Jack and Wanda Caraway of Waynesboro, VA. The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Gateway Baptist Church in Hickory. The Revs. Stan Frye and Jerome Walker officiated and burial was in Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gateway Baptist Church, Building Fund, 691 Ninth St., NW, Hickory, N.C. 28601.
