IN MEMORIAM

--by David Fulbright

Wanda Bishop

Wanda Bishop, wife of Delbert Bishop, a member of the Family Association Board, passed away recently. Most of us were not aware of Wanda's death at the time, and we want you to know of her passing and the loss to her husband and her daughter, Becky.

Wanda was a part of her husband's work in the family association and a friend to many of us. She won many of our hearts with her quiet and gentle spirit. Her pastor who supported Wanda and Del in her long illness commented that he had never seen anyone accept their own imminent death with such peace.

She was born on May 14, 1928 ,and passed away on December 23, 1994, in Springfield. She was buried at Mt. Comfort Cemetery north of Springfield, Missouri.

James Atchley

We lost another Family Association member with the death of James Atchley of Lebanon, Missouri. James had attended both recent reunions. He was a step grandson of the late Daniel Leeper Fulbright, an early Laclede County farmer and stockman. At press time, we do not have full information about James' passing He had a vital interest in the history of our family and was for many years a prominent businessman in Lebanon.

Lois P. Fulbright

Lois P. Fulbright born November 14, 1916, died on November 25, 1994, at age 78. She is survived by four sons, David L. of Clever, Missouri, Michael of Willard, Missouri, Martin and William H. of Springfield, Missouri, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren, one sister, Lorraine Goddard of Spingfield, Missouri. She was a former cashier for Katz Drug Company, a member of Campbell Avenue United Methodist Church in Springfield and a member of Order of Easter Star of Eldorado Springs, Missouri. Services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 1994 ,at Greenlawn Funeral Home North with her grandson, the Rev. Fred Fulbright, officiating. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Senator W. William Fulbright

Former Senator J. William Fulbright died on February 9, 1995. He was 89. He was the most widely known of the Fulbright family. He agreed to be the honorary chairman of the family reunion in Springfield, Missouri in 1991. We did not advertise that fact because it was in oral communication only. The late Marion Hoblit talked with him by telephone about the reunion. The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Fulbright represented Arkansas as a congressman for one term and as Senator for five terms.

He was the son of Jay and Roberta Fulbright. Jay Fulbright was a member of the Jacob Fulbright line in Fulbright history. Jacob, the nephew of John Fulbright, settled in the southeast Missouri area. Later, members of his family scattered. Senator Fulbright was born in Sumner, Missouri. A small museum in Sumner has been named Fulbright Museum in his honor. The museum has several personal items that the Senator donated.
