Research With Dr. Bill
by Bill Eddleman
After the Fulbright Association Reunion at Lake Junaluska, I was able to spend a day at the library in Waynesville and the county courthouse looking for Fulbright records. This library is an excellent resource for doing local research, although its book collection is somewhat limited. Genealogical resources are housed in the North Carolina Room of the library, and visitors must check in and have a librarian open the room for their use. All local records are on microfilm, and indexes are available for the land records. The officials in the courthouse allowed me to copy deeds on my own, and also allowed me access to court and other records. Because of the limited time I had, and the indexes available, I devoted a good bit of my time to early Fulbright land records in the area. A large number of these transaction involve land on Hominy Creek, which drains Dutch Cove and other areas near Canton, NC. A number of us saw part of this area at and near Morning Star Methodist Church during the reunion.
I would issue one caution. This listing is not complete, because Haywood County was organized in 1808 from Buncombe County. John Fulbright (and possibly his sons) received a number of land grants from 1799 to 1808 in Buncombe, and it is my understanding that David Fulbright and Judy Fulbright researched some of these records a few years ago. It appears that John sold his land in this area in 1815-1816, which would correspond to old accounts of when he left for Missouri. I did find the following document, however, which would indicate he still had property in North Carolina or debts against his estate in North Carolina when he died in 1820:
From Haywood County Wills and Inventories, Book A, page 4:
Jacob Shook as administrator of the Estate of John Fulbright decd. returns as the rights and credits of said decd. the following Debts which is supposed to be due and owing to said decd. Estate, (to wit)
Adam Snider $138.00
Henry Rodamill $ 47.50
26th September 1820 Jacob Shook Adms.
As can be seen below, these 2 men purchased land from John in 1816, and may have still owed money for this land at John s death 4 years later. Searches continue for any estate records for John Fulbright in Missouri.
