From our President

Ruth Blank

Dear Fellow Fulbrights,

It is with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to thank the Fulbright Family Association members who elected me Association President at Lake Junaluska. I was not only thrilled to be attending my first meeting but also excited to be with others who had the love and dedication for researching and honoring the memory of our forbearers. Consequently, when nominated, I felt bound to accept the honor bestowed upon me by my Fulbright cousins as well as to pay tribute to my own Fulbrights who provided the lively stories and discussion that sponsored my interest in family history.

My Fulbrights

Who were my intimate Fulbrights? My mother, Sara Frances, her sister, Eleanor Geraldine, her brother, Thomas Oscar, Jr. and my great aunt, Zorah Selma, who generally spelled her last name Fulbrecht.  Aunt Zorah’s mother, Sarah Emily McEntire, also a great story teller, was divorced from John Barnet Fulbright; however, she kept her children aware of their father’s family.  Each of these family members knew their Fulbright surname originated from Volbrecht, and each apprised me of this fact.

After Aunt Zorah’s death, December 18, 1958, I received a Lineage Chart, prepared in 1955 by Amos Medford, listing hundreds of names and detailing my Fulbright background from Johan Wilhelm Volbrecht to Sara, Eleanor and Thomas Oscar, Jr.  This Chart ultimately provided me with the curiosity and motivation to research the Fulbright family at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Silver Spring, Maryland, court and genealogy records in North Carolina and through the Internet.  Having worked on my father’s family for a number of years, I found, a surprise to me, that my mother was elated when I began bringing my Fulbright “finds” to her.  Many “finds” led to stories she remembered hearing from her grandmother and aunt.  Thus, in Mama’s declining years, she found a new interest and was extremely helpful in my quest for information.  Last September, Mama died, at age 96, still interested and happy when discussing her Fulbrights.

Increasing Membership

Hopefully, the foregoing will give you a feel for the deep interest I have in my family.  In addition, I have a strong concern for the Fulbright Family Association. To bring myself up to date, I downloaded and read the Newsletters from 1991 to the present.  It was obvious the work, time and interest put forth by those who started and built the Association.  We are all indebted to their service that has given so much to us and that will allow future researchers to begin so far advanced in their study.  However, at the Junaluska meeting, the attendees discussed as a high priority the need for increasing membership.  I wish, with your help, to make this my goal as your new President.

I, now, present you with an idea that may encourage our family members to join us. We completed a form including our antecedents when we joined the association.  I suggest that we take a blank form, add the antecedents, copy the partially completed form and distribute it to family members, especially younger relatives.  Or, if you wish, give it as a gift by adding the $10.00 check.  I have three children and five grown grand children, I make a pledge to have each of them on our rolls by October.  Let’s rock and roll and increase our membership!

Let’s Meet in Pennsylvania

The 2004 Association Annual Meeting will convene in Easton, Pennsylvania area, where the Volbrechts first sat down their American roots.  How exciting it will be for us to honor them by arriving in the place where their forbearance and endurance allowed them to start a new life and adventure in a strange and, often, threatening new land. So much of our Nation’s early history took place in Philadelphia and how proud we should be that in some way our family was a thriving part of those times.

While gathering information about the meeting site, I have become even more positive about the rightness of this venue choice by the members.  This is where it began for us as Fulbrights and as Americans.  It will be a wonderful place for you to bring your children and grand children to bathe in the history of  our country.  For those who have not walked up the path to the Liberty Bell, I can assure you it is a thrilling stroll.  And, to stand in the small hall, where the Declaration of Independence was created and signed, is a stirring moment.

An East Coast Vacation

Philadelphia’s motto is “The City That Loves You Back” and the Lehigh Valley is glorious in the spring.  Only 40 miles from Easton, it is also a short distance from Atlantic City (1 hour), New York City (1 ¾ hours), Baltimore (1 ¾ hours), Gettysburg (2 ½ hours), Hershey (2 hours)  and Washington, DC/Annapolis (3 hours).  So, make your plans for an East Coast Vacation starting June 25, 2004.

E-mail, Write or Phone Me

I welcome response from you with your thoughts and ideas on any aspect of my message, especially, if you have opinions or views on increasing membership and on having  the largest Association turnout ever in Philadelphia. ([email protected], 301-262-5958, 12659 Heming Lane, Bowie, Maryland, 20716).

I look forward to meeting each of you.

MINUTES OF THE FFA BOARD MEETING

JUNE 27, 2003 - LAKE JUNALUSKA CONFERENCE CENTER, NORTH CAROLINA

The Fulbright Family Association Board meeting was called to order on June 27 at 8:35 p.m. at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. Because David Herd was unable to attend, a Treasurer’s and Membership report that he had sent was read and approved. We have $2738.89 in the treasury before the cost of this reunion was taken out. We have 187 member families, with 5 new member families.

Paul Fullbright gave a Historian report. He stated that new North Carolina Fulbrights have been found, and added to the computer file and the web site. Paul’s e-mail address is in the newsletter, and you can contact him if you have trouble getting the Fulbright web page on the internet. He also said that he had bought more storage for his web site, and Fulbright information from the 1930 census (except Missouri) was not on the web site. All the Fulbrights on censuses from 1880 on up are listed on the web site. Ed Stout’s web site contains all the past newsletters. Paul plans to make a CD that gives information from different families and sell if off the web site.

The Archive report was given. Bill Eddleman will write a letter to the Springfield Museum with regard to access to the Fulbright Archives Room. He will inform them that Jean Fulbright is no longer a member of the FFA, and that we should have access to the Archives Room without Jean being present.

Bill suggested that we send photos and interesting things that are going on in our families at the present time for the newsletter. Otherwise, he only has historical records to include.

Judy Fulbright told us about Lake Junaluska and the program for Saturday. Bill stated that the Haywood County Deed Abstract book is done and it would sell for $20 at the meeting, $25 thereafter. The Laclede County Land Patents book is also still available.

We couldn’t get nominations for a full slate of officers, so we decided to receive nominations at the General Meeting. Paul Fullbright agreed to be Historian, and Bill Eddleman is willing to do the Newsletter and serve as Vice-President. David Herd has also agreed to be the Treasurer and Membership Chairman, and Patricia Herd is willing to continue to publish the Newsletter.

We discussed the possibilities of where to hold the next reunion. Suggestions included eastern Pennsylvania, Batesville, Arkansas, or California. It will be discussed at the General Meeting.

We discussed how to attract new members. It was suggested that we get together a brochure about the FFA, and pass it out to the different Fulbright families who are having their own reunions. Bill Eddleman agreed to produce a brochure and get it to the families when they let him know about the reunions.

A suggestion was made that we assemble a cookbook with Fulbright family recipes and sell if to raise funds. The idea was approved, and we will print softcover copies using a copy shop instead of using a publisher. This would be much cheaper and not require advance expenditures.

There was no further business. The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Janice Fulbright, Recording Secretary

  FFA COOKBOOK PLANNED!!

One thing I have noticed at FFA reunions over the last 8 years is the Fulbrights do love to eat! Recently, an article that appeared in a local Cape Girardeau County newspaper (reprinted from the 1940s) included a recipe from Mrs. Ed Fulbright, and at least one other Fulbright descendant. This got Hope and I to thinking that there must be a lot of heirloom recipes among the many Fulbright families in the FFA. Food and family recipes are one more heritage that Fulbrights have to share, so I presented the idea to assemble a cookbook at this year’s reunion.

Do you have recipes that your Fulbright family has handed down to you? Do you have any favorite recipes of your own family (which will, of course, become heirloom recipes in the future)? Do you have a favorite aunt (or uncle) who have any delicious dishes for which they are well-known? If you or other family members will part with these recipes, we want them for “Heirloom Recipes from the Fulbright Family”. This cookbook will be assembled by my wife Hope and I, and we hope that we have enough recipes to get it ready for next year’s reunion.

Of course, this cookbook should also be something you will treasure for the history that comes along with it. Include a brief (or, what the heck, not so brief) description of where you got the recipe, or what relative gave it to you, and your memories about each recipe. Be sure to tell us what part of the county you or your relative came from, how you/they fit among the many branches of the Fulbrights, and any other cherished memories you want to include. Artwork of your memories, or good, high-contrast photos or digital images, will also be welcomed.

Send the recipes, narratives, or other materials to Hope and I at: Bill & Hope Eddleman; 1831 Ricardo Drive; Cape Girardeau, MO 63701; or e-mail them to us at [email protected] if you are computer saavy. We will categorize them, organize the cookbook, and have it printed locally.

I’d like to see EVERY FAMILY in the FFA represented in this cookbook. Take an hour or so to write these down and send them along as soon as you can!

Descendants of this couple might find more on the family by getting the estate file of Daniel, or David, Davis from the NC State Archives in Raleigh. Also of interest in this document is the address of Martin Fulbright. This power of attorney was transacted when several of the sons of John Fulbright resided in Madison Co., Tennessee, and this adds to our slim collection of information about the family during the 1825-30 time period.]

NEW PUBLICATION AVAILABLE FROM THE FFA

At the Lake Junaluska reunion, Bill Eddleman unveiled the latest book he has done for the FFA: Abstracts of Haywood County, North Carolina Deeds, Books A-C. This book contains many references to Fulbrights and allied families, including the branchs of the Jacob and John Fulbright familes (sons of Johann Wilhelm) who lived in the area. Fulbright family historians, and others with ancestry in the area, should find it a useful resource. You can order copies for $25, postpaid, from Bill Eddleman, 1831 Ricardo Drive, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701. Also available is “Original Land Patentees of Laclede County, Missouri”, which sells from $17 postpaid from the same address.

Barnett and Aaron Fulbright Families - From Bible Records

Transcribed by Bill Eddleman

[Editor’s Note: The following information was contained in Bible pages believed to have belonged to Aaron Fulbright, son of Barnett Fulbright of Haywood Co., North Carolina. There are some indications this could also be parts of three Bibles, one possibly belonging to Barnett Fulbright Sr., one to his son Aaron, and one to Aaron’s wife Isabel’s family (Haynes) I found copies of these in the files of the late Dorothy Fulbright Schaper, when these files were donated to the Cape Girardeau County Genealogical Society by her husband Bern Schaper. I believe them to be authentic, because various entries are in different handwriting. I do not know where Dorothy obtained these copies, but all were stapled together, suggesting the same source. If anyone knows the present location of this Bible or Bibles, please notify me.]

David & Daniel Fulbright Deeds - Haywood County, North Carolina

Abstracted by Bill Eddleman

[These two deeds were abstracted from microfilm viewed in the Waynesville Public Library during the 2003 FFA Reunion. They are of interest because they document land sold to Adam Snider, a neighbor of the John & Jacob Fulbright families, in 1817 and 1821. The extreme delay in recording these deeds was because they were not recorded until the Snider estate was settled at his death in the late 1860s. The David Fulbright in the one deed is probably David “Judge” Fulbright, son of John & Elizabeth (Coulter?) Fulbright. I have yet to find how David actually received this land – no deed having been located, nor a land grant. Did the deed/grant not get recorded in the deed book nor registry book, or did David possibly get the land by gift from his father or his father-in-law Henry Smathers? The date matches when others in his family sold their lands prior to moving to Missouri. The Daniel Fulbright in the other deed is likely Daniel, son of Jacob (not Daniel N., son of John), because he purchased this land shortly before the parcel was sold, and the John Fulbright family can be found in various records in Missouri by 1821.]

OBITUARIES

Lovell C. Fulbright

Beloved FFA Member and Family Historian

Long-time FFA Members were saddened to learn of the death of Lovell C. Fulbright at age 95 on August 9, 2003, in Goodlettsville, TN. Lovell was a regular at the reunions until age forced him to stop attending after the last Springfield reunion in 1998. Lovell was a regular contributor to the Fulbright Family  News, and co-authored a book on his branch of the family (the John Fulbright line) with his son Jim, The Fulbrights, an Exclusively American Family. The book is still available at the Greene County, MO History Museum. Lovell was preceded in death by his wife, Mayme Fulbright. He is survived, by son and daughter-in law, Jim (Melna) Fulbright; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Interment was in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. [Editor’s note: Please send any other remembrances of Lovell to me for the next newsletter.]

Nellie Jane Mangold

Nellie Jane Mangold, 84, of Aberdeen, WA, died of cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at her daughter’s Bellevue, WA, home. She was born May 24, 1918, at Coffee Creek, Mont., to Elbert Levi and Amelia May (Fulbright) Stout.  After living in Coffee Creek, Arlee, and Missoula, Mont., and Seattle, WA, she moved to Aberdeen in 1943. On May 16, 1938, she married Wendelin Joseph Mangold in Missoula.  He died in 1989. Mrs. Mangold was a homemaker. She was also a 59-year member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen, and belonged to the church guild and alter society.  In 1988, the Knights of Columbus named the Mangold's, “Family of the Year”.

Nellie also was a charter member of and volunteer with the St. Joseph Hospital Service League in Aberdeen.  She volunteered with St. Mary’s Feed the Hungry program for 16 years and was a Harbor Health Care volunteer. She also volunteered with the Coastal Community Action Program in Aberdeen, were an assistant Girl Scout leader and a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Retired Eagles Activity Club. In addition, she was a Grays Harbor Opportunity 80’s Economic Development volunteer and an executive board member of the United Commercial Travelers Council 710.  She belonged to the Eagles Auxiliary, Golden Seniors Club, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Aberdeen.

Nellie was interested in Native American history, arts and beadwork. In her 70’s she took several hot air balloon rides.  Those close to her said that her next planned adventure was skydiving.  She also enjoyed handwork, arts and crafts, crocheting, reading and traveling.  She and her husband donated several items to the Westport South Beach Historical Society and to the Aberdeen Museum of History.

She is survived by two sons, Edward J. of Mill Creek, WA, and James L. of Alvin, TX; Three daughters, Dolores M. Buckingham, and Patricia M. Lee both of Vancouver, WA, and Joanne L. Wilson of Bellevue, WA; a brother, Edward E. Stout of Fallbrook, CA; a sister, Bessie Webb of Colville, WA; 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. A visitation was held at Whiteside Family Mortuary, a funeral Mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic church, and interment is at Fern Hill Cemetery, all in Aberdeen.

[Editor’s note: Thanks to Edward Mangold, Nellie’s son, for forwarding this. Our deepest condolences to her family, and to Ed Stout on the loss of his sister.]

Burke County, North Carolina Road Order

[The following was found an article, “Burke County, NC, Road Orders 1777, 1778, 1782” in the Journal of the Burke County Genealogical Society, Volume 15, Number 3, Pages 4-7 (1997). This was one of a number of road orders on scraps of paper that were found by Julia M. Case in the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, and transcribed by Jo White Linn. This particular order is not dated, but the mention of Andrew/Andreas Fulbright would place it in 1778 or before. Several of the names were those of known neighbors of the Fulbrights on Lyles Creek, and this area was part of Burke County during this time period. More details would be nice, but Burke County had many records burned during the Civil War.]
