SCOTLAND.
On Tuesday, Jan. 4. the annual
general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures, established by
Royal Charter in Glasgow, was held in the Town-hall, for the purpose of
electing six new Directors, as well as for the discussion of various other
matters, interesting to the commerce and manufactures of the country.
The meeting was very numerous and
respectable, and after a full explanation of the various interesting matters,
which had been under the consideration and management of the Directors, the
members at large approved of the steps that had been taken for the protection,
improvement, and support of the commerce and manufactures of the country, and
manifested, at the same time, their usual zeal for promoting every measure
that shall have a tendency to render this institution as extensively useful as
possible.
The Chairman presented to the
meeting five volumes of the History of Great Britain, written by the Rev. Dr
Henry of Edinburgh, which he had just received from the ingenious author, as a
present to the Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by a letter, expressing in the
most handsome terms, his warmest wishes for the improvement of the commerce
and manufactures of the country.
The meeting unanimously voted
their thanks to the Rev. Dr Henry, in terms of the highest respect, for his
abilities, learning, and public spirit.
The following letter from Mess.
Crawford, Stevenson, and Co. merchants in Port Glasgow, was also read to the
meeting:
"Port Glasgow, Nov.
15.1784.
GENTLEMEN, Having lately obtained
from you a certificate of the character we have hitherto
maintained in this place, as
merchants and fair traders, for the purpose of laying the same before the Rt
Hon. the Commissioners of his Majesty's revenue in Ireland, where our ship
Flora was laid up under detention, through the imprudence of the commander and
mariners having on board an over quantity of tea and foreign spirits, which
was sufficient, from the severity of the laws, to have confiscated our
property therein:
lt is but just that we take the
earliest opportunity of signifying to you, that the honourable testimony you
were pleased to give of our characters, added such weight and strength to our
memorial; and the Board thereby viewing our case with that candour which the
law hath so particularly discriminated the fair trader and the smuggler, did
not hesitate a moment in ordering the seizing officer to allow our ship to
pass to its destination.
This is the first instance we
have had occasion to feel, as individuals, the immediate advantage of being
members of your respectable Chamber. The testimonies of it, shown us upon this
occasion, claims our warmest acknowledgments, as well as the highest respect,
with which he have the honour to be, &c.
CRAWFORD, STEVENSON, & Co,"
The following gentlemen are the
Directors for the ensuing year:- Mess. Patrick Coiquhoun, James M'Grigor,
Gilbert Hamilton, James Dennistoun senior, James Somervell, John Campbell,
Clathick, John Lauie, John Robertson, Archibald Grahame, Robert Dunmore,
George Bogle, Henry Riddle, William French, Walter Stirling, Archibald
Henderson, David Dale, John Stirling, John Brown junior, Dugald Bannatine,
James M'Dowal,
*Alexander Brown, *John Campbell, junior,
*Robert Findlay, *Robert Morrice, Glasgow; Ja. Gammell, *John Kippen,
Greenock; Rob. Fulton, Wm. Carlisle, Ja. Lounds*, *Claud Neilson,
Paisley. - Those marked * are new Directors.
The funds of the Chamber of Commerce and
Manufactures have increased very considerably in the course of the last year,
notwithstanding many articles of unavoidable expence; and there is every
reason to hope that the valuable purposes expected from a further increase of
this find will be fully answered, and that it will become an establishment
still more extensively useful to the commerce and manufactures of the country.
