1761   May 1779

To the Memory of

Mr HUMPHREY FULTON,

Of Paisley,

Who introduced the Silk-Manufacture

Into Scotland.

In company with his Two Sons,

He often employed from four to six hundred looms,

And, in the various branches of manufacture

Gave daily bread to a thousand, frequently

Fifteen hundred people.

Many, with him,

Have merited of their Family;

Few have better deserved

Of their Country.

Distinguished

For a peaceable, chearful temper,

And an easy, obliging manner,

He passed through life

Without an enemy.

Endued with strong natural parts,

He unweariedly applied them

To useful purposes.

In the care of his family,

And attention to business,

He was exemplary.

He knew the importance of moral conduct,

As well in respect to this life,

As the future;

And the habit of active virtue

Strengthened his good principles.

From his own feelings of its propriety,

(Without show or affectation),

He exemplified that disposition

Which best marks

The real friends of JESUS CHRIST.

After a lingering indisposition,

Which he bore with much fortitude,

He left this world, with great composure,

In the firm hopes of a better.

27th May 1779,

In the 65th year of his age.

His memory will be revered,

While Industry, Good Morals,

And the Social Affections,

Are esteemed.

1762   A History of the Shire of Renfrew

The late Mr. Humphrey Fulton, merchant in Maxwelltown, near Paisley, left two sons and two daughters who are still alive. His eldest son William married Marion. eldest daughter of Mr. Henry Millar, minister of Nieslton; his second son Robert married a daughter of Mr. Peter Scott, minister, Laigh church Paisley (her sister maried Mr. Archibald Davieson, minister, Inchannan). His eldest daughter Margaret married to Mr. John McKerrel; his second daughter Mary, to Mr. Robert Bogg minister, Abbey-church, Paisley; they all have issue.

Mr. Humphrey Fulton, his two sons, and the said Mr. John M’Kerrel, were joint partners in trade for some time; Mr. M’Kerrel afterwards set up by himself; and in the year 1759 manufactured the first silk web ever was wrought in Paisley (John Wilson weaver) ; however, at the end of the said web, Mr. McKerrel dropt the silk branch for some time, and sold his silk on hand and other utensils, to Mr. Humphrey Fulton and sons, when, about three months following, they commenced the silk manufactory, in imitation of the Spittelfield manufactory.

I am informed, they received a premium.

(Mr Humphrey Fulton died May, 27.1.1779)
