4th Dec., 1854. (Silver Medal for Chateauguay).

James Forrest Fulton

His first appearance in the Army Lists was in 1802 where he was listed as an Ensign in the 38th Regiment of Foot, also known as the 1st Staffordshires. His rank in the regiment dated from 20March 1801.

In the 1804 List, he was a Lieutenant in the same regiment the rank dating from 8 December 1803.

The 1805 List repeated this information and in the section entitled ‘Alterations While Printing revealed that he had been made up to Captain in the 98th Regiment. This dated from 22 May 1804.

The 1813 List gave information which at first glance was contradictory. He was listed amongst the Majors, the date of the rank being 28 November 1812 and the Regiment being the 98th. In the section detailing that regiment, he was listed as a Captain with that rank in the regiment dating from 22 May 1804. Next to his name though was ‘Major, Army Rank 1 December 1812.’

The 1814 List was set out in the same way although his army rank was dated 28 November 1812.

In the 1815 List, he was a Major in the Canadian Fencible Infantry. His rank in the regiment dated from 27 October 1814 but his rank in the army was from 28 November 1812.

In the 1819 List, he was described as being on English half pay from 24 August 1816,with the Canadian Fencibles. There is still confusion about his rank In a list of Lieutenant Colonels, he duly appears, but in the section detailing the Canadian Fencibles he is described as a Major. Next to his name though is Lieutenant Colonel, Army Rank 1 November 1815.’

This dual status persists up to and including the 1823 List

In 1824 he once again appears in a list of Lieutenant Colonels with his rank dating from 1 November 1815. His regiment is now the 92nd Regiment of Foot however. Here he is listed as a Major with his rank in the regiment dating from 20 March 1823. Next to his name however is Lieutenant Colonel, Army Rank 1 November 1815.’

In the 1825 List, he didn't appear at all but in 1826 in the section entitled Local Rank' he appeared as a Lieutenant Colonel with date 24 November 1825 next to his name and then the word ‘Continent’

This listing was repeated up to and including 1847. From 1838 onwards he had the letter KH after his name and this stood for ‘Knight of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order.’ The 1847 entry acknowledged that he was late of the 92nd Regiment of Foot.

The 1847 List was the last one checked.
