1703   GEORGE JAMES FULTON

His first appearance in the Army Lists was in 1836 where he was listed as an Ensign in the 77th Regiment of Foot, also known as the East Middlesex. His rank in the regiment dated from 13 February 1835.

The following year, he was listed as an Ensign in the 62nd Regiment of Foot, also known as the Wiltshires. His rank in the regiment dated from 3 June 1836 although he retained his overall army rank dating from 13 Februiny 1835.

   In 1839, he was a Lieutenant in the same regiment, the rank dating from 11 May 1838. The 1840 Army List noted that he had purchased the latter commission and that he had served for five years on full pay. In that year the regiment was serving in the East Indies.

There was no entry for him in the 1841 List but an  unindexed section entitled ‘Deaths’ revealed that he had died since the last publication.

FULTON, George William Wright (2 son of Robert Bell Fulton 1788-1836, major Bengal artillery). b. Futtyghur, North West provinces 23 Nov. 1825; educ. Addiscombe 1841-3; 2 Lieut. Bengal Engineers 9 June 1843; captain 10 May 1857 to death; distinguished himself at siege of Lucknow, has been called the Defender of Lucknow. Killed by a cannon shot while inspecting a battery at Lucknow 14 Sept 1857. Thackeray's Biographical Notices of Officers of the Royal (Bengal) Engineers, 1900 pp. 96-8.

1704  GEORGE WILLIAM WRIGHT FULTON

In the 1844 and ‘45 Army Lists, he was listed as a cadet of the East India Comnpany’s army with local and temporary rank of Ensign whilst employed in Field Instruction at Chatham. This rank was dated 23 June 1843.

By 1846, this rank would appear to have lapsed as there was no mention of him in that year’s List.

IN pursuance of the “Regimental Debts Act, 1863,” notice is hereby given, that Her Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for the War Department has available, for distribution amongst the Next of Kin or others entitled, the sum of money set opposite to the name of each of the deceased soldiers named in the list which is published with this notice in the London Gazette, and the “Army List,” and is also to be seen at the Regimental Districts and at the Quarters of the several Staff Officers for the Pension Service throughout the United Kingdom.

Applications from persons supposing themselves entitled as Next of Kin should be addressed by letter to “The Under Secretary of State, War Office, London, S. W.,” and marked outside “Soldier’s Effects.”

1712   JOHN FULTON

His first appearance in the Army Lists was 1799 where he was listed as an Ensign in the 20th Regiment of Foot; also known as the East Devonshires. His rank in the regiment dated from 27 June 1798.

In 1800, he was a Lieutenant in the same regiment,  the rank dating from 7 August 1799. In 1802, he was a Captain in the same regiment; the rank dating from 20 June 1801. He was not not to be found in the 1804 List and there was no section in that year’s List giving details of retirements, deaths etc. so his fate is uncertain.

In the 1807 and 1808 Army Lists, he was listed as being on English half pay without any further detail.

The Society of Genealogists does not have an 1809 Army List and there was no mention of him in subsequent editions

1715   Richard Fulton

His only appearance in the Army Lists was in 1804 where he was described as having been ‘placed on Irish Half Pay in the year 1802 and 1803.’

 

1716   Richard Robert Fulton

His first appearance in the Army Lists was in 1841 where he was listed as an Ensign in the 44th Regiment of Foot; also known as the East Essex. His rank in the regiment dated from 12June 1840.

In the same year there was another Army List published, The New Annual Army List but it gave a different date far the rank, 18December 1840. In addition, it revealed that he had one year’s service on full pay, that he had purchased his commission and that the regiment was serving in Bengal.

In the 1843 List,  he was a Lieutenant in the same regiment;  the rank dating from 5 November 1841.

There was no entry for him in the 1845 List but a check of the unindexed section entitled ‘Resignations and Retirements’ revealed that he had left the Army.

 

1717   Robert Fulton

His first appearance in the Army Lists was in 1826 where he was listed as an Ensign in the 79th Regiment of Foot; also known as the Cameron Highlanders. His rank in the regiment dated from 12 February 1825.

In the 1827 List he was in the same regiment but as a Lieutenant. That rank in the regiment dated from 9 April 1826.

In the 1832 List he was in the same regiment but as a Captain. That rank in the regiment dated from 23 March 1832 but the rank in the Army dated from 16 March 1832.

There was no entry for him in the 1836 List and a check of the unindexed section entitled ‘Deaths’ revealed that he had died since the last publication.

1720   William Fulton

His first appearance in the Army List was in 1836 where he was listed as an Ensign in the 59th Regiment of Foot; also known as the 2nd Notts Regiment. His rank in the regiment dated from 10 April 1835.

In the 1840 List he was a Lieutenant in the same regiment, his rank dating from 11 October 1839. His commissions as Ensign and Lieutenut had both been purchased and he had five year’s service on full pay. The regiment at that time was serving in Corfu.

In the 1845 List he was a Captain in a different regiment, the 15th Regiment of Foot; also known as the Yorkshire East Riding Regiment. His rank in the regiment dated from 14 June 1844 whilst his rank in the Army overall dated from 12 April 1844.

Another Army List for that year, Hart’s, stated that all three commissions had been purchased and that he had ten years’s service on full pay.

The last List consulted was for 1847 and there were no new career developments to report.

His first appearance in the Army List was in 1837 where he was listed as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. His rank dated from 18 June 1836.

There was no entry for him in the 1839 List and a check of an unindexed section detailing personnel changes since the last publication indicated that he had died.

Discharge from His Majesty’s 1st Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards

William Fulton, born in the Parish of Calmus, in or near the town of Strebean in the County of Tyrone was enlisted at the age of 21 years and hath served the said Regiment for 22 years and 305 days. But in consequence of general ill health and length of service is considered unfit for further service, and is hereby discharged.

He is described as William Fulton, Sergeant, about 43 years of age, five feet five inches in height, brown hair, grey eyes, dark complexion, and by trade a weaver.

His military service was from 19 April, 1793, to 17 February, 1816.
