Descendents of David Darling of Seneca County, New York
1. David1 Darling Based upon the census records, David Darling was born about 1789/1795 in Delaware Co., New York. His occupation was listed as a shoemaker in 1850 and as a farm laborer in 1860.
He served in the War of 1812 as a private in Captain Daniel Curtis' Company, New York Militia from 16 May to 16 September, 1812, and was discharged at Black Rock, New York. He re-enlisted and was eventually credited with serving until May 24, 1813, although he apparently was absent for most of this time period. The question of whether he was absent without leave is discussed in the documents in his military records folder.
He is believed to have been married before his marriage to Catherine Lake but the name of his first wife is not known at this time. At the present only one child, Ezra Darling, is attributed to this first marriage. The basis for attributing Ezra Darling to the family of David Darling was found in a 1917 letter from Anthony Covert Darling to Carlos P. Darling.[1] The fact that both David and Ezra (married to Eliza) were reported to be born in Delaware Co., New York, and both were shoemakers adds support to the information provided in the letter written by Anthony Covert Darling. Given the fact that David was married to Catherine Lake in 1821, it is apparent that Ezra (married to Eliza), born in 1815, is not their son. The notes (available as LDS microfilms 000,622 to 000,626) of Adelia Darling Honey, in the Vermont State Archives from the 1920s, which have not been reviewed by this writer, are also reported to support the father-son relationship between David and Ezra (married to Eliza).
He married Catherine Lake at Seneca Co., New York, on 2 March 1821. She was reported to have died in January 1866. Based upon the census records, Catherine Lake was born about 1800/1801 in Seneca Co., New York.
Based upon the census and military records, it appears that David Darling was a resident of Lodi, Seneca Co., New York, from at least 1821 to 1860. Where he was during the 1870 census is not known at this time but he did not appear in the 1870 census records for Lodi, New York, Canton or Le Roy, Pennsylvania, or in Lime Creek, Iowa. In May 1871, he was residing in Lime Creek Township, Wassonville Post Office, Washington Co., Iowa.[2]
Although there may be a relationship between the David Darlings of Delaware and Seneca Counties of New York, based upon a review of the Delaware County History, census records and military records, the David Darling of Delaware County and the David Darling of Seneca County are two distinct individuals with no known relationship at this time. Information about the families of David and John Darling of Delaware County is provided in a separate family history report.
The fact that David shows up in Lime Creek Township, Washington Co., Iowa, in 1871, where Ezra Darling (married to Caroline Northrup) resided in 1860 and 1870 seems to indicate another possible family relationship.
It would also appear that the Elizabeth Darling (born 1817/1818 in Delaware Co., NY, married Jonathan Swarthout) is also related to this family, likely to be a daughter of David and his first wife.

2. Ezra2 Darling (David1) He was born about 27 April 1815 (based on age recorded at death) at Delaware Co., New York. He died 23 May 1868 and is buried in West Lodi Cemetery (Lot 27) Seneca Co., New York. In both the 1850 and 1860 census records, his occupation is listed as being a shoemaker.
This family was relatively poor when compared to some of the neighboring farmers. In 1850 he reported no property of value, and, in 1860 he reported have $150 worth of real property. During the 1850 census, his children Emily and Wilmer were recorded as living with neighboring farm families with real property assets of $5,000 - $6,200. In the 1860 census, his daughter Mary was working as a domestic servant and his children Ann and V. R. were living outside of their home, in the homes of wealthier neighbors. The three children were living in households with assests of $4,300 - $7,000.
He married Eliza Rockefeller in 1832. Her parents were Abraham Rockefeller and Mary McK. Welch. Based upon her age reported at death, she was born 21 July 1813. Various records indicate that she was born 20/22 July 1813/1816/1817 in Trumansburg, Thompkins Co., New York. If she was born in 1813 or 1816, it is likely she was born in New Jersey (as noted in the 1870 census) instead of New York because the other children of that age in her family were apparently born in New Jersey. She died 16 September 1889 at Monterey, Schuyler Co., New York and is buried at the West Lodi Cemetery, Lodi, Seneca Co., New York.
In the 1870 census her household included only herself and her daughter Margaret. Minerva was reported as a domestic servant working for the family of Elijah and Catherine Lott. In the 1880 census, Eliza Rockefeller Darling lived with Anna Darling Bishop (her daughter) in Seneca Co., New York. All the children were reported to have been born in Seneca Co., New York.[3] (Note: The Wilmer noted below is often seen referred to in the records by the name William.)

3. Abram C.2 Darling (David1) He was born about1822/1825 in Ontario Co., New York and died 1 Dec 1905. He was married to Lydia Fenner. Based on the census records she was born about 1812/1818 in New York/New Jersey. They lived in the Lodi area and are buried in West Lodi Cemetery.
During the 1850 U.S. Census, Abram's occupation was listed as tailor and he was reported to own real estate valued at $200. Living with them were George W. Cole (age 10) and Mary Cole (age 7), apparently the children of Lydia Fenner's first marriage. For the 1860 U.S. Census, Abram's occupation was recorded as farm laborer, and his wife Lydia was reported to have real property valued at $200. The two Cole children were not reported living with them in 1860. The 1870 U.S. Census records Abram C. Darling's occupation as a farm laborer and tailor. His wife's real property increased in value to $450 and it was noted that Lydia was the only one in her family that could not write. Her son George W. Cole (age 31) was recorded as living with the family.[4]

3. William2 Darling (David1) William was born about 1825/1829 in Seneca Co., New York. He is believed to be the William Darling who died 21 February 1863 at age 33 years and one month (born about 21 January 1830) and was buried next to Ezra and Eliza's son Irvin in the West Lodi Cemetery, Lodi, New York.
His occupation in 1850 and 1860 was recorded as farm laborer. During the 1850 census, William and his wife were living with his parents. He was married about 1850 to Harriet [-?-], who was born in Seneca Co., New York, about 1830/1832. They had real property worth $330 and personal property worth $40 in 1860.[5]

5. Lewis3 Darling (Ezra2, David1) Lewis was born on 25 January 1834 at Lodi, Seneca Co., New York. His occupation before the Civil War was listed as shoemaker. He was a resident of Canton, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania at the time of his enlistment in the Army. He resided at Canton until 1893, then lived in Ovid, New York from March 1893 until March 1894. He moved to Lodi, New York, where he lived until about 1898. He lived the rest of his life at Van Etten, Chemung Co., New York. He died on 10 February 1917 and was buried at Lodi, New York, on 14 February 1917.
He joined the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry at Canton, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1862. He served from 11 August 1862 to 24 May 1863 as a private in Captain Charles McDougall's Company (C), 132 Regiment. He participated in the battle of Antietam and served at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. He rejoined the army on 26 September 1864 and served until 31 May 1865. During this enlistment, he was a private in Captain Daniel W. Gore's Company (A), 57th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
He was first married on 4 July 1856 to Matilda (Mathilide) Hoagland at Canton, Pennsylvania, by the Rev. John Powell. Her parents were Elijah (Elizah) Hogeland (Houghland) (born about 1805 in Pennsylvania) and Ann Brown. She died on 10 July 1906, at age 75 (born about 1831), and was buried at Lodi, New York.
His second marriage was to Sarah A. Lambert. They were married by the Rev. Melvin J. Owen at Lodi, New York on 19 November 1907. Sarah Lambert was born in Jasper, New York. Her parents were George A. Lambert and Hannah Stotenbur. The witnesses to the second marriage were George and Annie Bishop.
Although his updated pension record file for 5 March 1915, states that Lewis Darling never had children, the 1880 census records indicates that both his daughter Ellen and father-in-law Elizah were living with Lewis and his wife Mathilide. The statement may have meant that he had no children by his second wife.[6]

6. Wilmer Starkey3 Darling (Ezra2, David1) He was born 17 March 1835 in Lodi, Seneca Co., New York. He became paralyzed on 17 April 1893. He apparently had a stroke which affected his vision and his mind. He died on 26 April 1894 of apoplexy at Canton, Pennsylvania, and was buried at East Canton, Pennsylvania. The affidavit of Anthony Darling and Lewis Darling identify Wilmer Darling as their brother.
He enlisted in the 50th Regiment of the New York Engineers on 27/29 August 1864 at Lodi, New York, but was never assigned to any company. He arrived at Barracks No. 1 at Elmira, New York, on 2 October 1864. He was detailed as a carpenter on 5 October 1864. While working about November/December 1864, he fell from the eves of a building, landed astride of a fence. A nail protruding from the fence penetrated his scrotum and one testicle. He was relieved from duty 23 January 1865 and was mustered out on 13 June 1865.
During the five years (about 1859-1864) prior to his enlistment in the Army, he was a resident of Lodi, Seneca County, New York, where he farmed. He apparently returned to farming at Lodi for five years after his discharge in 1865. He kept a hotel at Reynoldsville, New York (Pennsylvania?), for eight months (about 1870), then moved to Burdett (?), New York, for four months (about 1870). He next moved to Canton, Pennsylvania, where he farmed for two years (about 1871-1872). He moved on to Erwin (?), New York, farming there for two years (about 1873-1874). He returned to Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where he farmed in LeRoy Township for a year and in Canton for two years (about 1875-1877). He changed occupations, engaging in the trade of shoemaking in Mainesburg, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania, for a year (about 1878), then moved to Lambs Creek, Tioga Co., and then moved to Roseville, Pennsylvania, in 1881.
His military file physical examination records report his height as being 5' 4" to 5' 7" and his weight as being 185 lbs (1881), 180 lbs (1890) and 150 lbs (1894).
He first married Eliza Roberts about 1861. She died 17 January 1877 at Canton Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. They had one child. He was married to Stella Smith on 13 May 1877 at East Canton, Pennsylvania, by Justice of the Peace William S. Jayne. They had two children. During the 1900 census, Stella and her son Raymond lived near her son Robert and his family in Canton, Pennsylvania. She reported owning a farm free of a mortage. Stella died on 18 July 1940.[7]

message of 10 Nov 1998, Suzanne states that in the manuscript collection of
Carlos P. Darling, in the holding of the New England Historical and
Geneological Society in Boston, a 1917 letter from Anthony Covert Darling, who
was at Waterman, IL in 1917, when he was in contact with Carlos Darling, he
stated that David Darling was his grandfather, transcription of email message
in possession of writer.
