The Descendents of Baltasa (Balser) Vogel

Prepared by Sean Furniss
Updated 18 September 1992

The basis for this family history record is The Vogel Family of Buffalo, N. Y., which was written by Edward J. Ronsheim, Sr., of Anderson, Indiana, on 8 March 1952. A copy of this family record, from the files of Paul Anthony Vohs, was given to me by Edith Alexander (Mrs. Paul A. Vohs). I have edited the information in Ronsheim's family history into a more standard genealogical format, added additional names and information, referenced sources of information and added an index to family members.

1. Baltasa1 (Balser) Vogel He was born about 1788 at Litherschied, Lorraine, France. He died in 1859 in Keokuk, Iowa, and is buried near Clear Creek in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery.[1]

Baltasa was living in Sninigen, France, when his passport was issued at Speyer, France, on 2 March 1830. Baltasa Vogel was reported to have served under Napoleon and is said to have been in the march from Moscow. The Baltasa Vogel family lived in Buffalo, New York in the early 1830's, in southern Ohio in the late 1840's and in eastern Iowa in the late 1850's.[2]

Baltasa Vogel married Catherine (Katarina) Greiner in Europe about 1814-1815. She was born about 1794 and died 26 December 1872. Her mother was reported to have been a Schatz or Schotz, who lived to be 99 (thought to have lived about 1750-1949).[3]

Although the changing boundary along the upper Rhine River makes the tracing of the early Vogel family difficult, Ronsheim felt that the the family considered themselves to be French rather than German. The Schatz/Schotz and Greiner families found in Buffalo, New York, near Fremont, Ohio and in Keokuk Co., Iowa, were reported by Ronsheim to be related to the Vogels but no relationships were detailed. Ronsheim also reported that "... the Schatz-Greiner-Vogel group were quite wealthy prior to the ear of Napoleon."[4]
