OBITUARY OF Elizabeth Ann Rowley Gamblin

80 GRANDCHILDREN, 125 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO WHO ARE GREAT-GREAT
These are descendants of Mrs. Elizabeth Gamblin of Studholm - Close of a Noble Life.

Sorrowing relatives at her bedside saw the ebbing of a noble life at Studholm, Kings County, on September 5, and they knew that when death had come to Mrs. Elizabeth Gamblin there had closed the record of long years well spent, and brightened by many acts of charity and kindness to those among whom she lived.

Both in the County Fermanagh, Ireland, 87 years ago, Mrs. Gamblin, when but a child of six years was brought here by her parents. For a year they lived in Carleton and then the sturdy pioneer moved to the thickly-wooded districts and hewed for himself a holding out of the wilderness. In young womanhood came marriage of the daughter to James R. Gamblin, the ceremony being performed in Studholm. She reared a large family, but was never too busy to extend kindly offices to those about her in distress or sorrow. Her life is the record of noble characteristics given full scope and of acts of goodness which endeared her to all. Mr. Gamblin died 22 years ago, and he, too, left a record of good life and a reputation for integrity.

It is remarkable that Mrs. Gamblin's direct descendants are living today to the great number of 219. There are four sons, eight daughters, eighty grandchildren, 125 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. There is also one brother and joining with all these in their sorrow over her death, are many other relatives and numerous friends, including St. John people who had met her on their visits here and held her in high esteem. The brother is George Rowley, of North Range, NS. The sons are George and William of Johnston, Queen's County, James, at home, and Walter of Springfield, Queen's County. The daughters are: Mrs. Henry Steen of Johnston, Queen's County, Mrs. Edward Long, Mrs. John Reidle and Mrs. Geo. McKnight of Studholm, Queen's County, Mrs. Elizabeth Starkey, Mrs. Herbert Johnston and Mrs. E.C. Keirstead of St. John, and Mrs. James Small of Springfield, King's County.

Followed by a large concourse of people - there must have been fully 100 carriages in the funeral procession - her body was escorted on last Sunday to the United Baptist church at Snider Mountain, where impressive services were conducted by Rev, George MacDonald, pastor of the Sussex United Baptist church. Her four sons and two of her grandsons were pall-bearers.

Living in Springfield, NB in 1913, when his mother, Elizabeth Rowley, died. Living in St. Martins in 1926, when his brother, William, died. Living in Western Canada in 1934, when his sister, Maltilda, died. Walter left his second wife, and seven small children and moved to Fairvale, NB and started another family, and changed his name. He went by Walter Gamblin MacAllister. The family didn't know where he went and never heard from him again until after he moved to Alberta. They heard from him in 1927. He was living in Pitcher Creek, Alberta. When his brothers did hear from him, he did not tell them he had changed his name. When they tried, they could not find him. They heard about his name change in 1982, when his grandson's wife, Carol MacAllister, was researching her husband's family tree. She found the Gamblin name in a New Brunswick phone book, and wrote to Mrs. James R. Gamblin, to find out if they knew of a Walter McAllister Gamblin. She had somehow found out that he had probably changed his name. Walter Gamblin MacAllister got married again to Agnes Louisa Johnson Millar, and raised another family.
