ABERNETHEYS  IN 1981

Across the Fence

By Arvord Abernethy

Seems like 1981, has been a good year for me. My health has been good and I have never gone hungry.

I’m thinking mostly of the luck I’ve had in drawing some prizes. I drew a nice lady’s purse given away by Higginbotham’s that Mary has enjoyed using. Then Thompson’s Supermarket gave me a General Electric tape recorder that I drew there.

A few days ago the door bell rang and Mary answered it. Jason Jacks was standing there with a case of 24 bottles of Dr. Peppers. She thought that he was selling them for some school class or club, so she wasn’t very enthusiastic about it, but he soon convinced her that he was trying to give them to her. He told her that we had drawn one of the prizes that Radio Station KCLW gave away in the Dallas Cowboy Bash drawing.

Dot Taylor was the lucky person in the contest when she drew the trip to see the Cowboys play Philadelphia on December the 13th. From what I hear, the Cowboys will need all the help and backing they can get, and, knowing Dot, she will do her part.

When in City Drug the other day, I tried to convince Dot that KCLW had made a mistake in announcing the winner, but didn’t have any luck. Dot, take your good luck with you to Texas Stadium and help the Cowboys win.

As for me, I’m still looking for the $50,000 check I hope I won in the Reader’s Digest Sweepstake.

You need to walk by the west side of the courtside to get the full benefit of what the Woman’s Council of the Chamber of Commerce and the Maude Shockley Art Club have done in decorating the huge Christmas tree and fixing up Santa’s house for the children to visit. We owe all those people, a special thanks for the spirit of cheer they have added to our Christmas season.

I happened to be going across the courthouse yard when I met Pam Eilers and she warned me that I had better not go around on the west side as I might get involved in what all those busy women were doing. I didn’t tarry long as I could tell there were plenty of advisors there. One lady was atop a high step ladder moving a decoration around as different people would suggest the place where it looked the best. I hesitated long enough to see that they were doing a wonderful job.

You must go by and see it.

Evelyn Locke presented her pupils in a recital at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon, and I had to go by to hear our granddaughter, Allyson Poteet, play, “O Come All Ye Faithful”. Looking around, I saw several other granddads and moms with a big prideful smile on their faces.

It is encouraging to see a group of youngsters showing an interest in music as it can add so much to their lives later. Stay right in there kiddoes as music is something you can enjoy in this life and the one to come.
