XYZ - XTRA YEARS OF ZEST PEOPLE

Across the Fence

BY Arvord Abernethy

We have already had some of our Christmas. No, we haven’t even peeped into any of the packages; however I have slipped out some of the candy Mary made for Christmas. I’m not talking about those pretty things that are wrapped in colorful paper and tied with pretty bows; things you touch and taste. I’m talking about those deep down feelings of joy and peace which can’t be described.

It came about this way. Down at the First Baptist Church they have a group of Senior Adults that call themselves the XYZ Club. Xtra Years of Zest people who are adding years of joy and fullness to their senior years.

They meet once a month for a time of fellowship, a good program and a covered dish luncheon. Last Thursday was the Christmas program and the committee had asked the New Horizon Ranch of Goldthwaite to come again this year and present the program.

As one sat there listening to that clean-cut, neatly dressed choir of young girls and boys singing songs and Christmas carols, that deep feeling of the true spirit of Christmas filled your whole being.

The group was under the direction of Mr. Webb and he had been asked to sing again this year, “Sweet Little Jesus Boy”. Mr. Webb is black with a golden voice and as he put those three hundred pounds of feeling behind that song, your every emotion was touched. That is why I can say that I have already had a good part of my Christmas.

As I was talking to Mrs. Webb after the program, she stated that practically all the boys and girls at the New Horizon Ranch were there because they had been abandoned, abused or neglected. Very few have had trouble with the law.

As one looked into their happy, glowing faces, there came again that true feeling of Christmas, realizing that someone, yes many people, had thought that it was more blessed to give than to receive; giving these young people a new horizon to gaze into as they awake each morning. May this true feeling of peace and joy be a part of your holidays?
