George Washington & Sarah Virginia "Sallie" (Fergusson)
Chumney
Only the forgotten are dead and so we cannot say that
"Uncle" George Chumney is dead, but that he answered
"Here" to the last call on Friday, January 10, 1919, at 4:00
o'clock in the afternoon. Like autumn leaves before winter's
chilling winds, the veterans of the sixties are falling thick and fast
before the weight of increasing years. Thus "Comrade"
Chumney left the thinning ranks of gray to join the comrades gone
before.
George Chumney was born in 1849 on a farm in Virginia
seventy years ago. He was brought to Texas by his parents when he
was only two years old and has since resided continuously in the
state. He grew to manhood near LaGrance in Fayette County and was
then married to Miss Sallie Fergusson. Before coming to Hamilton
County some twenty years ago, he lived in the counties of Falls and
McLennan.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Chumney, six of
whom with the mother, survive him, and were at his bedside to bid him a
tender farewell when the summons came for the transition of the soul to a
fairer clime. With his wife and two young daughters Misses Bertia (Byrdie)
and Ima, he had been living near Olin, in the Gum Branch community but was
moving to the Live Oak community to make their home, and en route stopped
at the home of their son Arthur Chumney where he fell ill of heart trouble
and died. His health had been gradually failing since he suffered an
attack of pneumonia some twelve months ago.
Other daughters and his son are: Mrs. May Grisham of
Chillicothe, Texas; Mrs. Pearl Neal of Chillicothe; and Will Chumney of
near Hamilton. A number of grandchildren also survive him.
"Uncle' George Chumney served the Confederacy throughout the War as a
"Texas Ranger." He was not a member of any church, but
assured Rev. J. N. Campbell and his loved ones that he was prepared to die
and to go to that better land where he would meet them "by and
by." "Uncle' George Chumney was a true type of the
old-time Texan, loyal to his friends and hospitable and was never happier
than when talking over the old days. Well might it be said,
"Whenever he met a stranger, there he left a friend."
CHUMNEY, SARAH VIRGINIA "SALLIE" (FERGUSSON)
MRS. G. W. CHUMNEY PASSES AWAY; HAD 7 GRANDSONS IN ARMY
Funeral services were held at the Blue Ridge Baptist
Church Monday afternoon at 5 o'clock for Mrs. G. W. Chumney, 86, of Hico,
who died Sunday following an illness of nearly two years. Rev. Fred
Grubbs was the officiating minister.
Mrs. Chumney was born in Missouri, but came with her
parents to Texas at an early age. She had been a resident of
Hamilton County for the past 55 years.
Surviving are one son, four daughters, and a large number
of grandchildren, including seven great-great-grandchildren. She had
seven grandsons in the service of their country. Four of them are
already overseas. The surviving son is Will Chumney of Evant; the
daughters are Mrs. J. L. Grisham of Quanah, Mrs. M. W. Neal of Hamilton;
Mrs. Grady Coston, of Hico; and Mrs. Omer Cook of Stephenville.
---------
Sarah Virginia "Sallie" (Fergusson) Chumney was
born 16 January, Hannibal, Marion County, MO, to Robert Jefferson and
Virginia V. (Reamy) Fergusson. She married George Washington Chumney
on 4 December, 1872, LaGrange, Fayette County, TX. She died 11 June,
1944.
She was the mother of: William Daniel "Will"
Chumney, Arthur Wayne Chumney, Minnie Lee Chumney, May Iantha (Chumney)

and Ima Fay (Chumney) Cook

her bed at the family home. Mrs. Grisham's state of health had been

Hill of May and Rev. John D. West, of Hamilton officiating in the impressive
ceremonies. A choir of friends of Mrs. Grisham sang the songs that

O'Bannon, Roy Wood, Preston O'Bannon, George Perry, Clyde Gardner, Nelda
Hohertz, Freddie O'Bannon, Hazel Drake, Florene Wood, Cleo O'Bannon, Carol

Though the record of a life may be brief, the history
of such an one as Mrs. Grisham, faithfully recorded in the Book of life
would cover many pages. She beautifully fulfilled the mission of
creation. Myrtle Onie Deathrage was born in McNairy County,
Tennessee, October 21, 1883. Orphaned when a child by the death of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Deathrage (Allen Deathrage and Mary Jane
"Jenny" Treadway), she came to Texas to make her home with her
grandparents, who also died within two years after Myrtle Onie became a
member of their household. The sweet young girl was welcomed into
the home of uncles and an aunt until her marriage. She was married
to Charley E. Grisham on August 2, 1908. To their union three
children were born and with their father survive, mourn the passing of one
loved in a degree of very great devotion. The daughters and son are
Corene, Jewel, and Cecil, all at home. Other survivors are two
brothers and two sisters and a number of nephews and nieces. The brothers
are I. P. Deathrage, Baird, Texas; Bill Deathrage, address unknown; and
the sisters, Mrs. Maggie Lucas, Wink; Mrs. Sue Ella Vaughn, Hamlin.
A number of uncles and aunts of Mrs. Grisham are living and are
bowed in sorrow because of her passing.
The Christian life of this saintly character began in
1901, when she was converted and united with the congregation of
Missionary Baptists, at at Spring Creek in Fannin County. She lived
faithfully and devoutly to the end of the journey here. Through
faith loved ones here can hear the plaudits of welcome echoing from Over

THE DEATH OF BABY ANNIE RUTH KELLY
The hearts of loved ones are bowed in unutterable
sorrow because of the going away of Baby Annie Ruth Kelly, daughter of Mr.
and mrs. A. > Howard Kelly. The delicate and beautiful little
earth visitor came on March 17, 1933, and her baby spirit took its flight
on February 21, 1934.
Tenderly comforting funeral services were held at the
Blue Ridge Baptist Church on Thursday, February 22, at 3:30 p.m. in the
afternoon with Rev. Vernon Shaw, pastor of First Baptist Church in
Hamilton in charge.
The little baby was stricken with pneumonia, and from
the first the fight to restore the baby's health was a losing one, and the
devoted family and relatives saw the tiny form stilled in death, and
become a waxen lily.
Surviving the baby are the father and mother, Mr. and
Mrs. Kelly, three brothers and a sister, John, Nathaniel, Neal, and Mary
Jane. Adoring grandparents of the infant are Mr. and Mrs. N. Y. Williams,
and a grandmother, Mrs. Mary Kelly. Many friends offer sincere
sympathy to all those living today in the anguish of sorrow, and loneliness
with only memories of the precious little one on their hearts until the
glad Resurrection Day when they will be reunited with Baby Annie Ruth
throughout an eternity of joy.

DAVID M. RAIBOURN, RESIDENT OF TEXAS 91 YEARS, DEAD
David Martin Raibourn, aged 97 years. 11 months, and 13 days
answered his summons Home in the early evening hours of Monday, December 3
(1934). He had not been enjoying his usual vigorous health for
several weeks, but was not seriously ill at any time, death coming as a
sleep from weariness of burden of years. The end came at the family
home in the Union community.
Mr. Raibourn was a most interesting character especially in Southern
friends. He was a nephew of General Robert E. Lee who was a brother
of Mr. Raibourn's mother. Under the leadership of this renowned
officer and incomparable character he fought with the Confederacy until
the end of the conflict.
David Martin Raibourn was born in the state of Illinois on December
30, 1836. He came to Texas with his family at the age of six years
and grew to manhood as a Texan, imbibing all of the fine characteristics
of the pioneers of this section of the United States. He was a man
of perfect health, active in the last of his duties he desired to perform
and retained his faculties to that remarkable degree that friends of all
ages enjoyed association with him up until his death. He came into
town alone just few days before entering into eternal rest.
Mr. Raibourn drove his faithful horse to a buggy , and made almost all of
his trips about within a radius of some twelve to fourteen miles without a
companion.
The first residence of Mr. Raibourn in Texas was in Denton
County. He came to Hamilton County to make his home in 1905, and his
friendships became many and pleasant.
Ub 1874 David Martin Raibourn and Miss Susie Williams were happily
married. She preceded him in death by several years. They were
the parents of Seven children, two sons and five daughters. Four children
survive, namely, Mrs. Lillie Mae Parsons, of Rising Star, Mrs. Sarah Jane
Parsons, Miss Mattie Ellen, of the Father's home, and Edgar William
Raibourn of the Union community. His descendants number forty
grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two
great-treat-grandchildren.
For fifty years Mr. Raibourn served his Heavenly Father as a member
of the Missionary Baptist Church. He was faithful and cheerful in
the discharge of all of his duties of life, and was uncomplaining when
sorrows and hardships clouded his skies and beset his highway.
Impressive funeral religious ceremonies wee held for Mr. Raibourn at
four o'clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev. John D. West officiating, Interment
was in the Blue Ridge Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons: Charnie Robinson (Raibourn),

Bennett
This great old man has earned his rest, and those who miss him most
are sorrowful because he is with them no more, had consolation in the
knowledge that he will never have pain or sorrow. The deaths of his
saints is precious in the sight of the Lord.
