 CAPT. DANIEL THORNTON BUSH

My grandfather Capt. Daniel Thornton Bush was a pioneer in the area, living for many years at Caradan which area before 1887 was located in Hamilton County but became a part of Mills County when it was formed. In fact the town was named after him and a Mr. Caraway, using the Cara portion of his name and the Dan portion of my grandfather's name. This was done at the request of the U S Postal Service in order to establish a PO at Caradan -- it had to have a name.

Dan Bush came from the Tennesse Bush family which established and operates the Bush Bros canneries. No doubt you have seen Bush Bros canned goods on your grocer's shelves.

My mother, Louetta (Bush) Keel was the first woman ever elected to public office in Mills County. She served 3 terms as District Clerk in Goldthwatite before going to Austin to serve in the State Comptroller's Office until she retired.
