THE "NIGGER DOGS"
During the Civil War Grandpa Pierson was too
old or in too bad health to serve in the War. He was overseer for the
plantation of a man named Weaver Moore. When the War was over and the
Negroes freed, Moore, didn’t have any more use for his ‘nigger
dogs" and gave them to Mr. Pierson to bring to this county. There
were a dozen or fifteen of them, bloodhounds. They were later used to
chase Indians. In fact, "Uncle Johnnie"
or Judge Pierson used them to track down the Indians who killed Anne
Whitney, but they became footsore and couldn’t go any further. (See
Paige Massingill Story.)
