STORY BY JUDGE R. B. CROSS
Old Captain Hammack, once sheriff and saloon man, At Gatesville, was
riding horseback through Gholson’s Gap
one night, and heard the unmistakable sound of guns being cocked. He
yelled out quickly. "This is the wrong man; this is John Hammack."
and heard nothing more.
(Gap through which Highway 281 passes just south of Evant. Named for
the old surveyor Gholson, father of Frank and Sam Gholson. Also a creek
named for him. Famous place. Now much widened by the highway construction.
Frank Gholson lived in the old two-story stone house further on to the
left.)
