MORE ABOUT MR. SNELL

Snell had been back in this country some little time before they killed him. He went off to Bosque County and stayed for a time. He was back on business when Adult Ferguson ambushed and shot him nearly all to pieces on the mountain near the head of Hog Creek on his way back. When he came back and lived in a cave or dugout with two or three of the Terrell boys. Mr. Williams said he didn’t understand why he would come back when he knew they were after him.

When I said it seemed like eight or ten years was a long time to hold a grudge, he said Old Crockett Hendricks never forgot anything that he was mean. That he never could understand what they had against Snell, but thought perhaps after I told him the records showed an unreleased mortgage or deed on Adam Witcher’s land as security for Snell going on his peace bond when he was still alive, possibly that could have had something to do with it.

(It had been said, though maybe unjustly, that Snell "had beat a widder woman out of her land." S. R. Allen.)
