NOT IN CONTEMPT OF COURT
Mr. Williams said Judge Fleming was a good judge but "pretty
cross." Once Sheriff G. W. Wade [Wade was
sheriff from 1877-1879] had a deputy named Tom Caldwell who
was rather rough and ready. Mr. Tom Patterson (lived west of town, I
think, and believe there is a horseback picture of him in the courthouse,
not sure) was a man like others in that day, talked loud. He didn’t mean
any harm. It was down below the courthouse, and Judge Fleming sent
Caldwell down to stop the noise. Arrested Patterson and it nearly caused
trouble.
