APPRAISAL OF GEORGE N. GENTRY

Gentry had lots of good qualities. (He was the son of Captain Frederick Gentry, a San Jacinto veteran, who Mr. Williams said "was a sweet old man.")  He was a power for a long time, was a power even to the time he left here. We agreed that only good qualities could cause this. The people were not afraid to give him poser, and he was generally friendly, but he said he wouldn’t stand for difference or opposition; must have his way; no argument about it..

Mr. Williams thought Gentry was some sort of Minute Man during the Civil War in some sort of frontier outfit. So was Dave Smith. Mr. Williams said that he went to Dave Smith’s father’s house, Old Gabe Smith, a famous character, when Smith died in 1877. He lived about six miles this side of Gatesville. This was the first time he had ever seen electric lights, which were over at the Reformatory.
