KING AND FORTRAN -
PRINCES OF CHAIN SALOONS
King and Fortran owned the saloon in the building where John Mark, his
brother, had his store at this time. It was about 25 by 600 [sic] feet. Had two
pool and one billiard table, and a little part cut off for an office. King
was a young man, and Fortran was an old Frenchman. The lived at Galveston
and put in saloons at county seat towns over the state.
They wanted to put one in at Hamilton. Heard of Mr.
Williams, and went
out for him where he was punching cattle. He was drawing sixty dollars per
month and furnishing his own mount. They offered him one hundred dollars
per month and he accepted their proposition. All he had to do was to go in
and take charge of the business.
