JOHN GREENWOOD AND CATHERINE WITCHER

John Greenwood married Catherine Witcher in Hamilton County in 1860. Besides serving in the Home Guard:
(from my notes of people's I'm researching)
W. F. Cotton
Company of Home Guards
Roster Sept 16, 1861
Alex Kyle age 40 implies born about 1821
Asa Langford, 40
Dec. 1861
Robert Carter,
C. J. Carter
J. W. Witcher,
A. W. Witcher
John Greenwood (this is probably Sarah's husband)

John and his brother were also in the Texas Cavalry:

John and his brother Martin joined the Confederate States' 30th Texas Cavalry, Co. F, Captain C.C. McCurry's Company, 1st Texas Partisans, (Gurley's Regiment) on July 15, 1862, in Hamilton County, Texas. According to the enrollment card, they were enlisted by Captain Battle. They were mustered in on July 19, 1862 at Camp McCulloch, John as a 3rd corporal, 23 years old and Martin as a private, 21 years old. John appears on a muster roll for July and August, 1863, still as a 3rd corporal, paid by Captain Cook. Both John and Martin appear on hospital records in Houston on July 3, 1863. John was admitted to the hospital due to illness May 26, 1863 and returned to duty July 4, 1863.

John did not return from the war. We don't know where or when he died.  His brother Martin did return.  Sarah Witcher/Greenwood later married Thomas Holley.

Since there is no grave for John Greenwood, it seems a shame that he, too, isn't honored for giving his life in the service in war.
