SNEED, FREDA (GUMMELT)
A WOMAN SHOT TO DEATH AT HER HOME
Shared by Diane Reed
One of the most cruel and revolting crimes ever committed in Hamilton county was enacted last Thursday afternoon, February 30, at about 3 o'clock, when Mrs.
R. L. Sneed was shot and killed at her home about two miles East of Star, and her husband is under arrest charged with the terrible deed, having been
incarcerated in the jail here Sunday afternoon after hiding in the mountainous country of that section from Thursday afternoon until Saturday night about 10:00 o'clock when cold and almost starved he went to the home of his father, George Sneed near Evant, where on Sunday morning he was surrendered to Sheriff William Lemmons and Deputy Fred
Rodway. Up until the hour of going to press the prisoner had made no statement to the attorneys or officers. The office of Sheriff Lemmons was notified of the terrible tragedy and Deputy Sheriff Will West, County Attorney L. Brann and Deputy Fred Roidway preceded to the scene of the crime, where an inquest was held about eight o'clock in the evening by Esquire Evant Brooks of Evant, after which the body of the murdered woman was taken to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.
Gummelt, about five hundred yards from the Sneed home. The officers from Hamilton
instituted a search for the murderer, but without result. Authorities upon reaching the
scene of the murder found the dead body of Mrs. Sneed, from which the clothing had been burned off, lying in the yard near the porch on the south side of the house. Investigation of the premises showed that quit a struggle had taken place, three shots from a double-barrel,
twelve gauge shot gun having been fired, the first shot having gone into the floor just inside he east door; Mrs. Sneed evidently fled through the west door, a shot striking her in the left side, she left a pool of blood where she had fallen. She then dragged herself around to the porch on the south side of the home where the last shot was fired at such a close range her clothing was set on fire and striking her just under the right arm penetrated the heart and cause instant death. Her mother ,
Mrs, G. Gummelt was at home, and hearing the gun fire and ran out and was a witness to the latter part of the tragedy, but could not prevent the deed. A brother of the dead woman, Norman
Gummelt, was the first to reach the scene, but the woman was dead and the man who did the shooting had gone. He took charge of the three little girls who were at home and carried them to the home of his parents, Mr. and
Mrs, G. Gummelt. Rev. and Mrs. Lippard, who lived within a half mile of the Sneed home went immediately to the murder scene and remained until the arrival of the officers.
R. L. Sneed is thirty-one years of age and Mrs. Sneed was said to have been about thirty. She leaves five children, the two eldest boys having been in school when the mother was murdered.
Sneed, who had been under the care of physicians at Star for some time on account of ill health, is said to be very despondent and refused to talk to visitors to his cell.
