According to the records now in possession of C. T.
Lawson the Church
of Christ was organized in Hamilton along with the earliest builders
of the town. The first congregation was organized on the second Sunday in
April, 1876, and was composed almost altogether of Boyntons, Sparkmans,
and Austins. The first officers were: Elders J. T. Austin, and C. M.
Boynton; Deacons: Wm. Sparkman and J. T. Boynton. A small building was
erected on the west side of town was used until the erection of a building
on the site where the present building is now located. [S. Reagan and E.
Crews] This church has met regularly since its organization.
The present membership is about 175 and the following
compose the board of officers: Elders, C. T. Lawson, J. E. Smith, Will
Smitherman, W. P. Ferguson. E. B. Pruitt, Sr., J. W. Standley; Deacons, J.
P. Gerald, W. P. Lawson, M. A. Wilson, Tom Smith, J. F. Pruitt, Will
Glover. W. A. Wilson.
At the death of Mrs. T. F. Pace in 1928, her entire
estate, consisting of two residences, one business house and personal
property, was bequeathed to the Church of Christ. One of these residences
is used as a parsonage and revenue from the other property is being set
aside as a building fund. The congregation are now working on plans for
erection of a new building on their present site.
