CHURCH OF CHRIST

_____

According to the records now in possession of C. T. Lawson the Church of Christ was organized in Hamilton along with the earliest builders of the town. The first congregation was organized on the second Sunday in April, 1876, and was composed almost altogether of Boyntons, Sparkmans, and Austins. The first officers were: Elders J. T. Austin, and C. M. Boynton; Deacons: Wm. Sparkman and J. T. Boynton. A small building was erected on the west side of town was used until the erection of a building on the site where the present building is now located. [S. Reagan and E. Crews] This church has met regularly since its organization.

The present membership is about 175 and the following compose the board of officers: Elders, C. T. Lawson, J. E. Smith, Will Smitherman, W. P. Ferguson. E. B. Pruitt, Sr., J. W. Standley; Deacons, J. P. Gerald, W. P. Lawson, M. A. Wilson, Tom Smith, J. F. Pruitt, Will Glover. W. A. Wilson.

At the death of Mrs. T. F. Pace in 1928, her entire estate, consisting of two residences, one business house and personal property, was bequeathed to the Church of Christ. One of these residences is used as a parsonage and revenue from the other property is being set aside as a building fund. The congregation are now working on plans for erection of a new building on their present site.
