_____
Ike Commer, the subject of this sketch was born in
Russia. After his schooling in that country, at the age of 17 he left with
his father to come to the New World. Unable to speak a word of English,
when he arrived in Galveston on December 8, 1912, a card was pinned on the
lapel of their coats showing their destination to be Hamilton and they
were placed aboard a train for this city, and landed with only $2.50
between them. Upon their arrival here they began work for the Hareliks at
$15 per month, and their room and board. They saved their money and worked
hard. Mr. Commer traveled over the entire county buying poultry and eggs.
In 1919 he went into business for himself and by close application, square
dealings with his fellowman and a friendly personality he has built one of
the leading businesses of its kind in the city. He carries a complete line
of Purina Feeds, groceries, fruits, vegetables, and operates a 52,000 egg
capacity incubator. He has become recognized as an authority on poultry
study and by visiting and consulting with the large mills manufacturing
poultry feeds. He has made a number of trips to he Purina Mills in St.
Louis for the purpose of enlarging his knowledge and is a constant reader
of literature giving views on poultry raising.
In 1921 he was married to Miss Mamie Markman and they
have one daughter, Miss Esther.
Mr. Commer takes a very active part in civic affairs and
the Lions Club. At present he is one of the leaders in putting on the
County Fair to be held in Hamilton the latter part of August or the first
part of September. He is a worthy citizen and in this Historical and Trade
Expansion Edition of the News we urge our readers to call on him for
information regarding the Fair, poultry, or to deal with him in his
business.
