JOHN L. SPURLIN

_____

John L. Spurlin, a former citizen of Hamilton, when it was no more than a ‘cowtown’ was among the foremost business men and the peer of any of them in energy and public spirit. He now lives in Waco with his daughter, Elenore, who is remembered as a Hamilton beauty.

Mr. Spurlin had the leading general mercantile business in town for many years. He was the leading spirit and promoter in every public enterprise, whether social, church, or business. He never lost an opportunity to attract outside attention to the advantages of his home town and county along every avenue. He was a disciple of advertising; believing it to be a sure cure for every static condition that afflicts the average small town.

Mr. Spurlin organized the First National Bank and was the president of the Hamilton-Hico Telegraph Co. for a number of years. At that time he was an extensive land owner; owning many farm and ranches in Bosque, Hamilton, and Coryell counties. He has always been a democrat and was an ardent follower of William Jennings Bryan on the Free-Silver question.

Mr. Spurlin’s career in Hamilton as a public spirited citizen and a thorough going and wide awake business man may well challenge the admiration and emulation of its present citizenship. He was interested in every detail of the welfare of Hamilton, from the office of public school trustee to the big business and political affairs of the town, county, and state.

This now venerable former citizen of Hamilton always extends a hearty welcome to his friends from his old home town when they visit Waco.
