Major Cotton was born Feb. 19, 1853, in Anderson County, TX. He moved
when a child to Marion County, where he resided until he was grown. He was
educated in the common schools of the country and completed his education
at Daingerfield in 1873. He then read law in Jefferson, Texas, under
Messrs. Crawford & Crawford and was admitted to the bar in 1875. In
1875 he came to Hamilton, was appointed county attorney in 1887, and
elected to the same position in 1888. At the expiration of his term of
office he formed a partnership with C. K. Bell, which lasted several
years. He then was elected county judge, and later became a member of the
18th Legislature.
Though Major Cotton is dead, his widow still lives at Houston.
