S. N. CLABAUGH
[Samuel Newton Clabaugh]
For 59 years S. N. Clabaugh has lived in Hamilton
County. On October 24, 1938, he and Mrs. Clabaugh will celebrate their
sixtieth wedding anniversary at their home here in Hamilton, and they
expect to have all of their seven living children with them.
Mr. Clabaugh was born in Madison County, Texas, in
1854, and moved with his father, Cumberland Clabaugh, to Bosque County
when he was five years old, and grew to young manhood there. He them moved
to McLennan County for a short time, and came to Hamilton County in 1879.
He settled on Mesquite Creek in the western part of the county and lived
there 50 years. He has the original deed to his first 160 acres, recorded
February 16, 1880. Eight years ago, he and Mrs. Clabaugh moved into
Hamilton.
Mr. Clabaugh was married to Nannie Bell Nichols of
McLennan County in 1878. To this union were born nine children as follows:
Irma in 1881, deceased; E. N. in ‘83, living in Oklahoma; Elnor in ‘85,
now Mrs. S. O. Price of West Texas; Union in ‘87, deceased, 1932;
Thurman in ‘88, Emma in ‘90, now Mrs. W. B. McPherson, of Pottsville;
Oro in ‘92, now Mrs. J. H. Wells of Mangum, Okla.; Mollie in ‘94, now
Mrs. Fayette White of Hamilton County; Sammie in 1901, now Mrs. Johnnie
Pederson of Hamilton County/
Mr. Clabaugh was a cowboy in his younger days and spent
six months working on the first railroad that ever went into Dallas in
1872. During 1874 and ‘75 he was Deputy Sheriff of McLennan County
under Sull Ross. In Hamilton County he has been a farmer-stockman.
