JIM RICE-JOHN GROOMER, SCOUT COMPANY
They got Sam
here. Sam would not go into the army. They were out scouting and took Sam,
but they worked kind of a trick on him. They
went by his house and asked his wife if Sam was there, his wife said, no,
(but Sam was near by). They left word for Sam to come over to the camp,
acted like they did not want him, so Sam not suspecting anything walked
into their camp and they took him, he took down the names of every man in
that scout. Well Sam was carried to Waco, where he was kept under guard.
One night they had an old man, named
Clanton, I have seen him many a time, guarding Sam and Sam went to the
door for something and jumped out an ran off. The first place that he
could get to he got a horse (he knew whose horse it was) and
came on home when he got home he wrote the party owning the horse a letter
telling him where to find the horse and sending money for what ever damage
done.
