Notes for Leah HARNER
There has been confusion on the reading of Leah Harner's name. J. T. Acklen (1967) listed Alexander's bride as "Sue Harris"721 but that is almost certainly in error. A possible source of confusion is the marriage of Charles C. Dale to a Susan Harris listed by Lucas & Sheffield (1981) on the next line after Alexander and Leah's marriage.680 d'Armand & d'Armand (1970) have an annotation that researcher Mrs. Charles F. Wayland Sr. apparently read the name as "Sue Horner". Based on later name usage, however, it is a virtual certainty that the given name of Alexander's wife is "Lea" or "Leah". Her family name may still need some study.

I have no information on Leah Harner's background except that her son Joshua Dale stated in the 1880 Fed Census (when he was about 71 yrs old) that his mother was born in ENGLAND.50 "Harner" is a relatively uncommon name in early TN records. In the extant 1790 Fed Census for other states, there are several Harner's in Montgomery Co., PA, and a few in Dauphin Co., and Philadelphia. The progenitor of the Roane Co., TN, Harner's (below) may have been either Christian Harner Sr. or Jr. Up through the 1820s, I have found the following Harner's in various TN references, but I don't know if any are related to Leah:

Barbara HARNER m. Francis ABEL/ABLE, 25 May 1810 (or 1816?) in Knox Co.677,680
Philip HARNER m. Kitty VICKERS, 14 Sep 1811 in Knox Co. Witness: John N. Gamble.680
William HARNER had a letter waiting for him at the Franklin, Williamson Co., TN, post office at the end of June 1810.722
Philip HARNER m. Sarah CLARK, 27 Oct 1820 in Roane Co., TN.677
Christiana HARNER m. Odem C. TALLENT, 19 Apr 1823, Knox Co.; bondsman John Pritchett, witness William Swan.680
Henderson HARNER m. Polly LYNCH, 28 Apr 1823 in Jefferson Co., TN.677
Catherine HARNER m. Edward PRITCHETT, 18 Aug 1825 in Knox Co., TN.680
Adam HARNER m. Mary HINES, 19 May 1826 in Roane Co., TN.677
Nancy HARNER m. Abraham HAUN, 1 Jan 1827 in Jefferson Co., TN.677

There are more Harner marriages in Roane Co. from the 1840s thru 1870s; these may be descendants of Philip and Adam Harner listed above.

All of the above assumes that "Harner" is correctly read for Alexander's wife. The surname "Horner" is a bit more common. For instance, a James Horner is found on the 1799 Grainger Co. tax list (which also has Alexander Dale on it). Also, a John Horner occurs on a tax list for Grainger Co., TN, in 1805, and five Horner's are listed on an 1822 tax list for Jefferson Co., TN.
