WARNING: I know of my Bolin roots first hand through William Benson Bolin. After him the data may not be completely accurate. For example, there are many who speculate that Edward S. Bolin, Sr. was not born in Ireland but sailed for America from Cork County, Ireland. He may have in fact been born in England. There is also speculation that the middle initial "S" is not correct but has 'evolved ' onto the name since the use of the Internet and ability to spread info quickly. Lastly, I am not an expert on the Orangeburg area. I say all of this because I don't want to put bad information out and have anyone take it as gospel fact. I have seen numerous trees on the internet that are blatantly wrong so I want to work with everyone to get rock solid sources for everything on these pages. Thanks and enjoy.

My mother's maiden name is Bolin. That is how close I came to being one myself. Her father was William Harrison Bolin. He was born in Neeses, South Carolina on June 12, 1931. He grew up in Neeses but his family moved to Florida by his high school years. William Harrison graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1948 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the Korean Conflict in both Korea and Japan. Hearing him talk, the four years my granddaddy spent in the U.S. Marine Corps were the proudest of his life. His friends called him Bill but his mother always referred to him as William Harrison. After the Marines Bill went to work for the Sea Board Coast Line Railroad as a conductor. He retired in 1989 after 38 years of service. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post 7909, American Legion Post #400, the brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Gator Boosters of Gainesville.

His parents were Thomas Carlisle Bolin and Lucy Kathryn Harrison. T.C. was from Neeses and Lucy from Kline. They were the first two of my Bolin line to move out of South Carolina after nearly 200 years of settlement there. Lucy was an alumnus of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

T.C.'s parents were William Benson Bolin and Nettie Lee Caughman. My great aunt remembers that they used to call William "Mr. Benson" and her grandmother "Big Nettie". Both William and Nettie were born in Orangeburg County.

Mr. Benson's parents were Thomas Jefferson Bolin, Sr. and Matilda Ann Argoe. Thomas and Matilda were also second cousins. He served during the Civil War as a private in company D, 20th South Carolina infantry in the CSA. He died in Neeses on May 02, 1908 and is buried in the Rocky Swamp Methodist Church Cemetery. His folks were William Martin Bolin and Mary Eleanor Phillips.

William and Mary just so happened to be first cousins also. They were married on February 18, 1830 in Rocky Swamp. William Martin died when Thomas was only 3 years old.

The parents of William Martin were Edward Bolin, Jr. and Mary Jane Dickerson who were married on September 22, 1810. Edward Jr. was the first American born Bolin of my line. As I understand it, he was born in 1792 in Willow Swamp Tampa Mill, Orangeburg County. He was a farmer by trade but I also understand that he served in the South Carolina militia in the War of 1812. He possibly had even more military service throughout his life. Edward tried his hand at marriage three times.

Ed Jr.'s folks were Edward Bolin, Sr. and Anne Elizabeth "Nancy" Salley. Edward Bolin, Sr. is most probably the progenitor of all of the Bolin descendants from the Orangeburg, South Carolina area. He was born around 1740 and while he probably sailed to America from Cork County, Ireland he was most likely English. The names Bolen, Bolin, Bolan, and Bollin all mean a dweller near the Bolin River, located in Cheshire Co. in NW England.
