Notes for Hezekiah Chaney, Sr.:

One source says born 1742

Came to the Cripple Creek area, Grayson Co (or Wythe Co) Virginia, about 1775, and lived on a tract of land containing 393 acres, located on McCendleys (McKinleys) Run. The small branch is designated today as Chaney Branch on the topographic maps of the area. The land lies south of Lick Mountain in the vicinity of Rowes Crossroads, and the run joins the main branch of the creek northeast of the town of Speedwell.

The name Chaney was written with several variations in the local records, perhaps because Hezekiah could not write, and adopted an unusual seal to serve as his signature. The name was written Chiney, Cheyne, and Chinia, as well as China. This was the only family of the name in the early records of Wythe County, and by 1830 there were no families of that name living in the area.

Hezekiah Chaney owned several tracts of land adjoining his original selection, finally acquiring a total of 2,100 acres in the vicinity of his home place. Only 200 acres of the land were cleared during his lifetime. In addition to his house and outbuildings Chaney owned and operated a mill located at the gap below his house.

"Lived in Wythe Co., VA" Doris Perkins

The following from www.angelfire.com/la2/gen/hezekiah.html 4/15/01

The spelling change of Cheney to Chaney started with Hezekiah in this line. Other branches 0f the Cheney tree adopted different spellings. Hezekiah went to the Cripple Creek area in Mongtomery Co. (Wythe) VA about 1775. 1782 Montgomery Co VA pers prop tax lists: Cheyne, Hezekiah, 2 1 12 26

Hezekiah lived on a tract of land containing 393 acres, located on Mccendleys (McKinleys) run. The run, or branch is designated as Vhaney Branch on topographic maps. The land lies south of Lick Mountain in the area of Rowes Crossroads. He acquired several tracts of land, about 2100 acres, adjoining his original property. In addition to the out buildings, he owned a mill located at the gap below his house, orchards, and sold timber to the charcoal furnace. Hezekiah's family was the only Chaney family in the early records of Wythe Co VA. By 1830 there were none. All had moved on.

Notes for Jane unknown:

or Jean

Child of Hezekiah Chaney and Eleanor unknown is:

i. Sarah8 Chaney, b. 1774.

Notes for Sarah Chaney:

Nickname listed as Sally.

listed in 1776 census, "probably dying." (!)

But one unconfirmed source says she married an unknown Williams.

Children of Hezekiah Chaney and Jane unknown are:

8. ii. Mary C.8 Chaney, b. Abt. 1777, Grayson County, Virginia; d. Nov 23, 1863, near New Boston, Linn County, Missouri.

iii. Sally Chaney, m. unknown Williams.

Notes for Sally Chaney:

There is some confusion here. Hezekiah's first wife (Eleanor) is said to haver had a daughter, Sarah "Sally" Chaney, b 1774, shown by one source as dying in 1776, but by another source as having married an unknown Williams.

There may have been 2 Sallys, or one of those listed may be incorrect.

9. iv. Elizabeth Chaney.

v. Jenny Chaney, m. Joseph Cowden.

vi. Nancy Chaney, m. Robert Cowden, Jr..

10. vii. Hezekiah Chaney, Jr..

viii. Archibald Chaney, b. Abt. 1788; m. Nancy Ball, 1812.

Notes for Archibald Chaney:

Archibald was said to be a "dutiful son" and lived at home with his parents, assisting his father in operating the plantation. It seems that his father felt some guilt about an accident he caused. Archibald's eye was put out by a sporan (worn with a kilt) the father was wearing.

Notes for Nancy Ball:

or Bale

ix. Abel Chaney.

x. Hoseah Chaney.

xi. Hiram Chaney, m. Mary Etter, 1813.

Notes for Hiram Chaney:

"Hiram Chaney married Mary Etter in 1813, and shortly afterwards "went west" as many of the community did in these early times."

xii. Caty Chaney, m. (1) unknown Stone, 1813; m. (2) Richard F. Stone, Nov 18, 1814, Wythe County, Virginia.

Notes for Caty Chaney:

Her actual name is thought to have been Catherine, but this is unconfirmed.

Notes for Richard F. Stone:

It is not specifically confirmed that this Richard is the one buried at the Stephen Stone private cemetery, except that Nancy Stone, Elk Creek, Grayson County, VA, has an unscourced remark in her notes (1999) to the effect that "Stephen, wife, brother, and 3 slaves" were buried there. (See notes for Stephen Stone.)

There is a Lucinda Stone buried with Richard. Could this have been a daughter? Or a second wife?

Was Chaney Stone a daughter of Richard? (See spouse of Martin Stone, son of Richard's brother Stephen.)

Generation No. 8

8. Mary C.8 Chaney (Hezekiah7, Richard6, Isaiah5, Charles4, Richard3, Richard2 Cheney, Richard1) was born Abt. 1777 in Grayson County, Virginia, and died Nov 23, 1863 in near New Boston, Linn County, Missouri. She married Stephen Stone 1819, son of Jeremiah Stone and Susannah Comer.

Notes for Mary C. Chaney:

Nickname Polly.

One source said birth 1794, but this is unlikely. In a note written by Leland Rogers Stone (see notes for Stephen Stone) her gravestone (missing by 1939) was said to have been marked 1777-1863.

"Buried in private cemetery on the family farm."

The 1860 Linn County Census lists her in G. H. Stone household.

Notes for Stephen Stone:

Lived in Grayson County VA, then Howard County MO for 8 years, (possibly then Barry County MO), and to Linn County MO, in 1842.

"Buried in unmarked grave on the family farm in Linn County, MO."

"Stephen Stone was Irish from Wythe County, Virginia" (from an old Stone family Bible)

"A planter who owned a large number of slaves."

"Stephen Stone (brother of William Stone, both sons of Jeremiah) entered land from gov. 1 sec, then, another and brought 40 slaves to Linn Co., MO, from VA. He built the farm house including slave cabins. Private cemetery across from the house. Stephen, wife, brother and 3 slaves buried there. 20 M NE of Brookfield, MO (around 1837-1840?)" Information from Nancy (Mrs. Ernest) Stone, Grayson County, VA, Oct, 1999. But she did not remember where this information came from.

"These people buried across the road from G. H. Stone home. Stephen Stone - 1769-1846, Mary Chaney Stone - 1777-1863, Richard F. Stone - 1868-, Lucinda Stone, Negro slaves. In 1907 - grave stones in place. On a visit - 8-4-39 with Cecil Stone - all grave stones were gone." From a note on card stock hand-written by Leland Rogers Stone. On the reverse side of the card he had drawn a small map showing a road (unnamed) heading North from highway 11, West of New Boston, passing the A. H. Stone place on left, the G. W. Stone place on right, then curving to the West, and heading back South, where it passed "slave cabins before 1865" on the right, the G. H. Stone place on the left, and then, just prior to the road turning West, "private cemetery, 20x20" is marked on the right. (Note the birth date for Mary Chaney Stone ??? And who was Lucinda?)

Notes for Martin Stone:

Martin may have been Stephen's son by a first wife.

Notes for Mary Camden:

This is probably Polly Cowden of Wythe County, VA. In "Glimpses of Wythe County, Virginia" by Mary B Kegley, she states that Martin Stone and his wife Polly Cowden moved to Grayson County (from Wythe County.) If so, she was probably related to Joseph and Robert Cowden, elsewhere in this database.

Notes for Chaney Stone:

Who was Chaney Stone? An unproven theory is that she was Richard F. Stone's daughter by his first marriage to Catherine/Caty Chaney, which would have made her a 1st cousin to Martin. See notes for Martin...

He married Mary Catherine Bailey Sep 1, 1842 in Linn County, Missouri, daughter of Jacob Bailey and Catherine Maddox.

Notes for Granville Henderson Stone:

Granville Stone was undoubtedly named after Granville Henderson, a prominent citizen of Wythe County, VA, and probably known to both the Stone and Chaney families.

"A Democrat. He owned 900 acres of land in Linn County by the time of his death."

"Granville H. Stone came to Mo. in 1835 from West Virginia. Came to Linn Co. in 1842. Was married Sept 1 1842 to Miss Mary C. Bailey. A member of the Baptist Church. Surviving members of the family: Mrs. Mary C. Stone, wife; sons Albert H., Geo W., Walter J., Andrew J., John G; daughters Mrs Sarah C. Forrest, Annie E. Roberts, Martha J. Cable, Julia M. Mitchell, and Mary E. Little. Pall Bearers: (all grandsons) Robert L. Stone, Henry G. Stone, Albert Homer Stone, Charles C. Stone, William W. Stone, Lewis J. Imbler." (From hand written "A Record in Memorium", M. Y. Rusk funeral director, Brookfield) (Note: Lewis J. Imbler was not a grandson, but the husband of a granddaughter Alma Emma Stone.)

"One of the oldest and most respected settlers in Linn County is uncle Granville Stone, as everyone calls him. He came to Linn from Howard County in 1841and in 1850 settled on the farm where he now resides. His house, when first built, was one of the best and costliest in Linn Co. The weather boards, doors and finishing lumber are made of black walnut, now richly colored by age. The inside lumber is of soft native woods, heavy timber all hand hewed and all lumber hand planed and dressed.

"In this house ten children were raised and they are all living at this writing.

"He has a good memory and can tell many intresting incidents of the early settlers here.

"One fall he drove his hogs up out of the woods, sorted out sixty head from two to five years old, and drove them to Brunswick. It took about two days to make the drive. They were sold to a butcher at 1 1/2 cents per pound, dressed weight, and as the market was unusually good that year, they were fat and brought about $5 each. This looks low to us, but land was then selling for $1.25 per acre.

"Mr. Stone is in his 89th year. Mrs Stone is not quite so old and they both do their several duties about the barn and house as they used to do over sixty years ago, though not quite so spry as then." (From an undated, unidentified newspaper article, about 1908-1909)

"Although but fourteen years of age when he became a resident of Missouri, and but twenty-two when he located in Linn county, the late Granville H. Stone of North Salem township is fully entitled to be listed with the pioneers of this county and the state, and one of the heroic personages who blazed the way for the present high state of civilization and development in this part of the country. From the time of his arrival in Missouri, youth as he was, he made a hand on his father's farm and did as much as any other person in helping to reduce it to productiveness and improve it with the requirements of a comfortable home.

"Mr. Stone was a native of Grayson county, Virginia, where his life began on November 11, 1820, and his parents, Stephen and Mary (Chaney) Stone, were of the same nativity as himself. The father was a planter and owned a large number of slaves. In 1834 he moved his family by teams to Missouri, consuming six weeks in making the trip. He located near Fayette in Howard county, where he bought a small tract of land on which he lived and labored eight years. In 1842, at the end of the period named, he sold his land in Howard county and moved to Linn County, where he bought a larger tract of land in North Salem township.

"On this new farm in the wilderness the parents passed the remainder of their lives, the father dying on it on August 7, 1846, and the mother on November 23, 1863. They had five sons and five daughters, all now deceased.....

"Their son Granville attained his manhood in this state, and in the limited schools of his youth here completed the education he had begun in the similar schools of his boyhood in his native state. The farm on which the family located in Howard county was yet almost virgin to the plow when his parents took possession of it. He aided his father in clearing and breaking it up, and bringing it to productiveness. He accompanied the rest of the household to this county in 1842, and here, also, he assisted in the work of redeeming from the wilderness the land on which the domestic shrine was erected, remaining at home until he reached the age of twenty-two.

"On September 1, 1842, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary C. Bailey, a daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Maddox) Bailey, who were born and reared in Kentucky and came to Linn County among its pioneers..... At the time of his death, which occurred on December 23, 1910, on the old farm which he had occupied and cultivated for fifty-eight years, and 160 acres of which were given to his wife and himself by her parents at the time of his marriage, he owned 900 acres of land, all in an advanced state of cultivation and well improved. He was a deacon in the (Pleasant Grove) Baptist church and a leader in public affairs. His widow is still living on this farm with her son Albert, who is farming it with industry, judgement and skill." (from "History of Linn County" 1912)

One source states that Granville Henderson Stone died of cirrhosis of the liver.

"W. J. Stone, of the firm of Stone & Mitchell, came to Baker township in 1851; is son of Granville and Mary Stone, and has been all this time a resident of the township." from "History of Linn County, Missouri. 1882.

1912 "History of Linn County" describes him as living in Lind, Washington.

Notes for Frances A. Wheeler:

"Fannie" All documents seen, including deeds and marriage license, show her name as Fannie rather than Frances.

1900 Census: Living with her father & sons at 103 E. Park, Brookfield.

1910 Census: Living with son Cecil on North Livingston, Brookfield.

1915 Brookfield City Directory: Shown as widow of Albert (??) and living at 116 E. John.

1920 Census: Living with son Cecil at 1112 N. Main, Brookfield.

1924 Brookfield City Directory: Shown as widow of Andrew and living at 1112 N. Main.

Birth record for Herbert says this was her 5th child! But this is probably faulty information considering that she was only 18 when Herbert was born. More likely 5th was a misstatement of 1st.

Marriage Notes for Andrew Stone and Frances Wheeler:

The divorce is presumed. Frances never remarried, but Andrew did, in 1893. As of June, 1999, no record of a divorce between Andrew and Frances has been found.

Notes for Isabella Rothrock:

"Belle" and "Isabel". Buried in Sunny Slope Cemetery, Banning, California
