        West Virginia Militia




        Several Belchers lived in West Virginia Counties and most of them served the Confederate cause. William Floyd, Jr., was the only one for a while that was known to serve in WV Union regiments. Recently in the WV in CW on the Web a list of 70 names of Belchers were found who served in the WV Militia.
        Introduction to the rosters is as follows which helps put it into perspective.

        Many soldiers started out in the original Virginia State Militia units, which had been functioning since the colonial period. While most secessionists joined regular Confederate regiments, many Union men stayed with the County militia regiments, which were then dubbed "Home Guards" or "Scouts". These men were useful in guarding rail lines and as local forces fighting Confederate guerillas. Many of the men later joined regular Union regiments. After the conclusion of the war, West Virginia Adjutant General Francis P. Peirpoint noted that "the conduct of these companies with few exceptions, has been uniformly good, considering the slight restraint under which they were unavoidably held. Much objection was made against the organization of such companies, for fear that they would, under the slight authority given them, and by the virtue of their power, go beyond their authority, and commit unwarrantable depredations. In this, however, their most bitter enemies have been disappointed, and the most sanguine hopes of their friends more than realized."

        In 1911 West Virginia state historian Virgil Lewis procured from the State Adjutant General's Office the records of West Virginians who served in Union militia units. These records, which are grouped by county, include muster cards, muster rolls, forms and requisitions, and correspondence.

        At this time, more than 31,000 muster cards for soldiers in the following counties have been entered into the database:

        Sorting through these it appears that the following list of 27 men served the WV Militia in the Union cause. Several of these were shown in the Confederate units. William and Paris served together which filled in a large gap . The list is sorted by unit which helps to isolate which county they served in and may help with relationships.
        B Wyoming County
        had 11 men in three different units; 190 WV regiment, wyoming Minute Men, and the Wyoming Scouts

        Kanawha
        had men in two units: 153 Regiment and Kanawha Stater GuardsThere were also men to serve from Roane, Raleigh, Calhoun and McDowell Counties.

        The VA State Lines were state units from VA that served the Confederate Cause.

        1 VA State Line: Allen and Lewis. Lewis may have served the Union cause in the 153 WV Militia as a Company commander..

        2nd VA SL: Abraham, Eli and George. Eli ccould have been Eli of the 153 WV Militia

        3rd VA SL: William Belch could have been William Belcher of 153 WV Militia. I have not compared all the names with VA Confederates, but I believe there are other connections.

        Interesting that only two of the names in the WV Militia showed on the normal Union organizations for WV. The NPS has posted histories and roster for 30 WV Union organizations and William Floyd, Jr. in 7th Cav., and Louis Belch of the 12 WV Inf., possibly Capt Lewis Belcher of the 153 WV Militia, are the only names found. Would have thought there would have been more.

        .....West Virginia became the 35th state of the Union on June 20, 1863.
        Created in the midst of the Civil War, West Virginia provided to the Union Army 31,872 regular army troops, 133 sailors and marines, and 196 United States Colored Troops, during that terrible conflict of 1861-1865.
        It is also estimated that somewhere between 16,000 and 20,000 men served in the Confederate Army in this war of "brother versus brother."
        Some West Virginians and Kentuckians served on both sides:
        originally joining the Confederacy and when mustered our joined the Union.
        West Virginia was a border state and had many people on both sides.
