Will of Philip Guston Alston, Nov. 1820
Born 1762, son of Philip Alston (1706-1784) & Winefred Whitmel (1729-1795)
In the name of God Amen, I PHILIP G. ALSTON of the County of Warren and State of North Carolina, being of Sound mind and memory, do make and declare
this to be my last Will & Testament.
Imprimis- I give and bequeath unto my belov’d wife MARY ALSTON, all my household & kitchen furniture, blacksmith tools and plantation utensils, also the
following Negros (to wit) CHARLES, PINDELATE, HARTY, ANSILLA, NANCY, FED, MINDER, FRANK, FANNY, MILLISHA, WARREN, HENDERSON, KING, MINNY, NELSON,
and HARRY, and their increase to her & her heirs forever. I also lend to my belov’d wife Negroes DEMSEY, & STERLING during her
natural life. I also give her my riding carriage, which I intend to purchase hereafter and the two carriage horses, also the rest of my horses males &c
also Twenty head of cattle & a yoke of steers her choice of my stock, all my stock of sheep and as many hogs all of my stock as she may choose for the
support of herself and such of my children as may then be with her, also as much corn & wheat oats & fodder as may be sufficient to support herself and
family for one year after my death. I also lend to my said wife all the land whereon I now live lying on the maple branch and Shocco Creek including the
mill &c for and during her natural life.
Item- I give and bequeath unto my son GEORGE ALSTON, all my land lying on the east side of great Fishing Creek, also the following Negroes- (to wit)
JOHN, LUCY, CHARLES, JOHN, SAFFRONY, BEEDY, SALLY, ALLEN & CAROLINE, and their future increase to him and his heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath unto my son PHILIP GUSTON ALSTON, after the death of my wife MARY, all my land lying on the Maple Branch and Shocco Creek,
also the following Negroes (to wit) ISAM, MARY, REUBEN, POL, NANNY, BETTY, PRISCILLA, EMMALINE, & WASHINGTON and their future increase to him and
his heirs forever.
Item- I give to my daughter ELIZABETH ALSTON, one Negro girl, CLARISSY, & her future increase to her and her heirs forever.
Item- I give to my daughter CHARITY ALSTON, one Negro girl CHANY, and her future increase to her and her heirs forever.
Item- I give unto my daughter JAMES MARTHA ALSTON, on Negro girl DEUTERONOMY, and her future increase to her and her heirs forever.
Item- I give unto my two daughters EVELINA ALSTON and ELENOR NORFLEET ALSTON, one Negro girl each to be selected out of my stock by my Executor herein
after named & such as in the opinion of my said Executors will best suit the ages of my said two daughters, to them and their heirs forever with their
future increase.
Item- I give to my daughter ANN MARIAH ALSTON one Negro woman JANE and child HAYWOOD and their future increase to her and her heirs
forever.
Item- I give my two old Negroes BRISTER & JINNY to which ever of my children they may choose to live with.
Item- I give and bequeath to my daughters ELIZABETH ALSTON, CHARITY ALSTON, JAMES MARTHA ALSTON, EVELINA ALSTON, ELENOR NORFLEET ALSTON & ANN MARIAH
ALSTON, all the rest and residue of Negroes, and their increase to be equally divided amongst them, to them and their heirs forever.
Item- I give and bequeath to my son GEORGE ALSTON after the death of my wife Negro man-DEMSEY, to him & his heirs forever.
Item- I give to my son PHILIP GUSTON ALSTON, after the death of my wife, Negro man STERLING to him & his heirs forever.
It is my will and desire that all my property of every description not disposed of by this will be sold by my Executors upon such credit as they may
think proper and the money arising from such sale after the payment of all my debts to be paid over to my wife to be distributed among my children as
she may think proper. I do hereby nominate constitute & appoint JESS A. DAWSON, HENRY DAWSON, JAMES LEWIS, and WILLIAM WILLIAMS (son of JOSEPH JOHN
WILLIAMS) my Executors to this my last will & testament, and I do hereby revoke and declare null and void all former will and wills by me heretofore
made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Sixth day of November 1819.

The Execution of this last will & Testament of PHILIP G. ALSTON, was proven in in Open Court by the oaths of HENRY SOUTHALL and JOHN M. HUNTER and on
motion it is O.R.

Pursuant to the annexed order we have set off and allotted to JOSEPH WILLIAMS in right of his wife MARTHA JAMES (ALSTON) the following Negroes, viz:
- Jacob
- Daniel
- Nicodemus
- Hubbard
- Henry
- America
- Grace (child of America)
- Eliza (child of America)
Being that portion of her Father’s Estate to which she is entitled by his last will and testament. The sd. JOSEPH
WILLIAMS is to pay the Executors of P. G. ALSTON dec’d eight dollars 66 2/3 cents this 23rd Jan’y 1821.

DAWSON & JAS. LEWIS Executors has chosen out of his Estate too Girls which we think most suitable for EVELINER ALSTON and ELENOR ALSTON the girl that is
chosen for EVELINER ALSTON is name CHARITY and the one for ELENOR ALSTON is name VILET.
They were taken out 23rd Jan’y 1821.

This selection of the two Negro girls above named for EVELINER & ELENOR ALSTON daughters of PHILIP G. ALSTON was returned to Court by JAMES LEWIS JR. &
on motion it was ordered to be recorded.
