Will of GILBERT EVANS -1827

February 1827
Gilbert Evans was married to Phebe (listed as Tibey) Lumbley on June 20, 1780 in
Wake County, North Carolina. He first appears on Tax records in the 1781 list of
Captain Daniel's District of Wake County with 500 Acres of land, alongside his brother,
William Evans (both listed as EVENS), who had 100 Acres. He continued to appear in
the county in Deeds and on Tax lists at least through 1825, when William K. Evans paid his taxes for
186 Acres of land in the Lick Creek District of Wake County. Gilbert was one of 4
brothers who settled in the area - Morris, Gilbert, William and John Evans- with at least
Morris and, possibly John, having settled prior to the Revolutionary War. Morris Evans
served as a soldier in the Continental line in the Hillsborough District of North Carolina,
while their brother, John, also served in the Revolutionary War and died after serving for
3 years. Gilbert and William were listed as "white" in most of the census records, while
Morris was listed as a "Free Colored Person", but their brother, John's, Revolutionary War
Land Bounty record clearly identify all of them as brothers.
The following is from the Wake County Record Book 20, Page 100:
In the [sic] of God. I GILBERT EVANS of the County of Wake and State of North
Carolina, being of perfect sound mind and memory, blessed be God for the same. Do
this 9th day of February 1827, make and publish this my last Will & Testament.
First I recommend my body to the earth to be decently buried, at the descression of my
surviving friends & secondly my Soul I give into the hands of Almighty God trusting for
a Joyfull resurrection at the great day. Item 1st my desire is that all my just debts be paid.
Item 2nd I give and bequeat unto my loving wife PHEBE EVANS, my land whereon I
now live, during her natural life, and after the death of my wife, I give the said land
which is to contain one hundred acres to EMELINE EVANS, Daughter of WILLIS
EVANS, and (to) HENRY BRYANT EVANS, son of said WILLIS EVANS, also all
personal property after my debts be paid, I gave to my wife PHEBE, to expose of at her
ownd descression. And also the land whereon my son JOHN lives, supposed to be 100
acres, I give to my wife, Phebe to expose of at her own will. I hereby make and ordain
my son DANIEL EVANS Executor to this my last Will and Testament. In Witness
whereof I the said GILBERT EVANS, have to this my last will & testament, set my hand
& seal the date above written.
