Know all men by these presents that I WILLIAM WEST of Warren County and State of North Carolina for and in consideration of the sum of the sum of[sic] two hundred Dollars to me in hand paid by MOURNING EVANS the receipt of which I do hereby acknowledge have this day given granted sold and delivered to the said MOURNING one Negro man named NAT about forty two years old to her only proper use and behoof for ever and I the said WM WEST for myself my heirs Excrs. administrators or assigns do warrant and defend the said Negro NAT to be free and clear of any manner of Incumbrance whatsoever or from the lawfull claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 31st day of Dec'r 1804.

Warren County, NC - Mourning Ivins Petition to Emancipate Husband, 1806

To the worshipful the Justices of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of the County of Warren. The memorial of Mouring Ivins humbly representing sheweth unto your worships - that your memorialist is a free person of colour residing in the County aforesaid - that she early in life marryed and connected herself with a negro man that the property of William West -
that by him she has eight children - that sometime in the year 1804 your memorialist by her sole care and industry accumalated money enough to purchase her said husband Nat of his then proprietor William West aforesaid and accordingly received from the said William West a Bill of sale which is of record, transfering to her your memorialist the absolute right & title to the said Negro Nat - your memorialist further states that the said Negro man Nat has ever conducted himself towards her as a faithful and affectionate husband - that in all circumstances as well in sickness and in health he has manifested to your memorialist & her children the most unceasing care & solitude - that by his industry & attention he has enabled your memorialist to support her children free from want and as respectably as any persons in their condition - your memorialist in consideration of the premiss and test upon the death of your memorialist the said negro man Nat should by the policy of the State or her children & their representatives be reduced unto a state of slavery prays that your worshipful body will free & emancipate the said Nat by the name of Nathaniel Ivins & your memorialist as in duty will ever pray

To the honorabell gentel men whome this may cum befor - there is a negro man by the name of Natt which said negro I ras'd from a childe until I solde him to Mouring Ivins and she the said Ivins has a disior all togeather to set him free if yor Honner gentel men pleas to take it in to consideraticion I will enform you on my honner the correcton of said negro Natt as wel as I can - he is a engenias hand and common about a plantaticion or as you genrally find and an extrodonary shue maker and verry endusstrus and while he lieved with me I entrusted abundance of buisness in his hands and he proformd his duty verry faithfully to me - so that I entended to sett him free at my deth but his haveing a free wife and childrean I solde him to her for butt trifeling - I am gentelmen your frend - given under my hand this 23rd day of august 1806

MOURNING IVINS Court Petition Approved

A Memorial of MOURNING IVINS praying in consideration of meritorious services therein stated praying the Court to emancipate & free her said Husband a certain Negro man NAT by the name of NATHANIEL IVINS the court after considering of the facts stated in the memorial, order & adjudge that the said Negro man NAT, be emancipated & set free with all the rights & privileges of free persons of colour, the said MOURNING IVINS entered into Bond & Security according to law.

MOURNING IVINS Emancipation Bond for her husband, NAT/aka MATTHEW EVANS

Know all men by these presents that we MORNING IVINS and BENJAMIN KIMBELL are held & firmly bound unto THOMAS EATON Chairman of the County Court of Warren & his Successors in office in the full & Just Sum of One hundred pounds to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Exrs. &C jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 28th AD 1806.
The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounded MOURNING IVINS hath obtained the emancipation of a Negro Man by the name of NAT, Now if the Said MOURNING IVINS shall save harmles or free from Charge the parish or County; on account of the said emancipated man NAT then this obligation to be void otherwise to Remain in full force and virtue

CASWELL DRAKE to MATTHEW EVANS-1814

This Indenture made this 5th day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fourteen between CASWELL DRAKE of the County of Warren and State of N. Carolina of the one part and MATTHEW EVANS of the County & State aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that the said CASWELL DRAKE for and in consideration of the sum of One hundred and ten dollars current money of the United States to him in hand paid by the sd MATTHEW EVANS before the dealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge hath bargained granted and sold and by these presents doth absolutely grant, bargain and sell to the sd MATTHEW EVANS his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the sd County of Warren on the South side of single branch beginning on the branch ISHAM BENNETT's line on a black oak thence up the sd branch to a black oak at the mouth of the tarked branch thence up sd branch to the head thence South east along a line of marked trees to a black oak in JOHN HATHCOCK's line thence along his line East to ISHAM BENNETT's line a white oak thence north along his line to the first station containing by estimation one hundred acres more or less together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appurtaining thereto. To have and to hold the said land and premises to his own proper use and behoof forever, and the said CASWELL DRAKE for himself his heirs &c doth moreover convenant and agree to and with the sd MATTHEW EVANS that he hath a good and lawful right and title to the aforesaid land and premises and can lawfully convey the same, and that he will forever warrant and defend the same against all and every person or persons whatsoever unto the sd MATTHEW EVANS his heirs and assigns forever. In witness whereof the sd CASWELL DRAKE hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and date abokve written.

ISAAC EVANS to FALCONER TRUST-1829

This Indenture made this fifth day of December one thousand eight hundred & Twenty eight between ISAAC EVANS of the first part and WILLIAM THRIFT of the second part both of the County of Warren and State of North Carolina & ALEX H. FALCONER of the County & State aforesaid of the third part, Witnesseth that whereas the said ISAAC EVANS is justly indebted to the said WILL THRIFT in the sum of one hundred & forty dollars, due by notes executed on January 1st 1825 the other Janry 1826 with interest twelve months after date. And the said ISAAC EVANS being willing and desirous to secure the payment of the same with the lawful interest that may be due thereon now this Indenture witnesseth that for and in consideration of the primises and also of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said A. H. FALCONER the rec't whereof is hereby acknowledged. The said ISAAC EVANS hath bargained sold and made our unto the said A. H. FALCONER his heirs, Exrs. Adm'rs & assigns one piece or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County and State aforesaid & containing by estimation forty six & a half "Acres" more or less adjoining the lands of NATH'L EVANS, JOHN CHEEK & HILLARY CAPPS. Also one gray horse, one brindle cow & heifer, twenty barrels of corn, two stacks of fodder & black & white sow & pigs & bed & furniture. And the said EVANS doth moreover covenant and agree to and with the said A. H. FALCONER that he will defend forever the right and title to the aforesaid property unto him the said A. H. FALCONER his heirs and assigns upon special trust & confidence. That if the said ISAAC EVANS shall pay or cause to be paid unto the said WILL THRIFT the above sum of money with interest on or before the "eight" day of December, Instant, then this Indenture to be void & of no effect, but if he fails so to do it shall & may be lawfull for the said A. H. FALCONER his heirs &c to make sale of the aforesaid property for the best price that can be got for ready money first giving ten days notice in the said County & out of the proceeds to pay the said WILL THRIFT the above sum of money with all cost &c & the overplus if any to be paid unto the said ISAAC EVANS his heirs &c & if the above does not sell for enough the said EVANS is to pay it otherwise. In witness whereof I the said ISAAC EVANS have hereunto set my hand & seal the day & date above written.
