Sir William Sinclair of Roslin was granted a charter by Alexander II 14 September 1280 upon the resignation of Henry de Roskelyn (perhaps Sir William's father in law). He married first Amicia (probable daughter of Henry de Roskelyn. He opposed Edward I's invasion of Scotland 1296-99. He probably died as a prisoner in the Tower of London.

Burke's Peerage does not mention a second marriage to Matilda of Orkney, but many believe it to be true.

Burke's Peerage states that the parent of William Sinclair is Robert Sinclair, a Norman, and not Henry Sinclair of Rosslyn as other places state.
