Meeting book of the New Harmony Church of United Baptist 1845-1860

Know yea all of whome this may come. That we the undersigned preachers and Ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christe of that order of Christians known as the united baptist being called on by a number of brethren of the same order of Christians whose names are hereinto annexed to constitute them into a Church We declare that in persuance of the above mentioned object we met at a house called mauldon School house in Buchanan County and State of Missouri on the twelft day of January in the year of our Lord 1845. And went into the examination of the brethern and Sisters refered to above and found them to be members in good Standing in the different Churches from whence they Came as reported in their letters of dismission therefore we have proceeded to constitute them into a united baptist Church upon the summary faith that is herwith Submitted and as such declare her to have power to transact all business that may come before her in gospel order.

Jan 1845

United Baptist Church was first organized in a log school house.  It was located on the farm now known as Jim Birkhead farm.  It was organized with 23 members

It was named N. Harmony C. at this Jan. meeting. They had church & business meeting on the 3rd Sat. of each month.

Jan 1847

Rev. Reed was the 2nd preacher.  At this time they moved to meet at the Union School house 1/2 time.

Aug 1849

They appointed Bro. Snider to furnish seats with backs.  Each person agreed to pay his part which was $10.00 per seat.

1850

Rev. Bradley was preacher.

1854

Church appointed a Committee of 5 to select a meeting house.  Creed Herring, Edward Snider, Isreel Christie, Anderson Neal & Sith Dunn.  Three sights [sites] were selected.  One was droped. [dropped] The other two one was the Gartin farm 3/4 mile from Malden & the other one was not mentioned.

Articles of Faith

We believe in one only true and living god and that thare are three that bare record in Heaven the Father the word and the Holy Ghost and these three are one ---

2nd We believe that the Scriptures of the old and new testaments were given by inspiration of God; and are the onley infallible rule of Faith and practice ---

3rd We believe in the fall of man and that all Adams posterity are Sinners by nature and that thy have neither will nor power to deliver themselves from their condemned and Sinful state by any ability which they possess by nature ---

4th We believe in the doctrine of Election by Grace according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world. That we should be holy and without blame before him in love having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself according to the good pleasure of his will ---

5th We believe that Sinners are justified {brown stain} by the righteous ness of God whith {brown stain} Christ Jesus imputed to them {brown stain} that they are kept by the power {brown stain} through faith into Salvation {brown stain} to be revealed in the last time

7th We believe that no minister has the right to administer those ordinances only such as have been regularly Baptised called and are acting by the authority of the Church of Jesus Christ ---

8th We believe in the resurrection of the Just and unjust but everyone in his [gi]ven order they that have done good { } to the Resurrection of life

They that have done evil unto the {Ris??? tr????} of damnation; And God hath appointed a day which he will Judge the world in righteousness by What man whome he hath ordained

And that the Joys of the Righteous and the punishment of the wicked shall be eternal

Meeting of the Third Saturday in Feb 1845

The Church being assembled: after servis proceeded to business as follows

1st Chose brother Worley moderator

2 Proceeded to select a name for this church where upon it was agreed that it shall be caled New harmony

3rd This Church calls brother Mathias Cline to preach for the term of twelve months

4th Agreed that the hour of meeting shall be at 11 oclock on the third Saturday in each month

1st Brother Mathias Cline chosen moderator

2nd The Church takes up for consideration the propriety of changeing her articles of faith after some deliberation the matter is postponed until a? next meeting

1st Brother Moses Jeffers chosen moderator

2nd The reference from last meeting relative to changing our articles of faith called for, And after investigation the change is made

3rd Received Brother Edward Snyder and Sister Malinda Snyder his wife by letter

4th Brother John Herring requests a letter of dismission after some consideration it is refused til our next meeting

Articles of faith

1st We believe in the only true and living God the Father the Word (or Son) and Holy Ghost equal in wisdom power and glory

2nd We believe the scriptures of the old and new testaments to be of divine authority and the only infallible rule of faith and practice

3rd We believe that God purposed in himself for his own glory to make a display of his wisdom power justice goodness and truth in the works of creation which he hath made in the dispensation of his providence

4th We believe in the total depravity of human nature and that a recovery from that situation is wholely and entirely of the sovreign free unmerited grace of God in Christ Jesus

5th We believe that god from eternity purposed to save a people from their Sins for his holy names Sake; and that in infinite wisdom devised the plan and appointed the only mean necessary to accomplish the ??? and of their redemption which he expects in his own time by the operation of his Holy Spirit

6th We believe that sinners are justified before God alone bythe righteousness of Jesus Christ imputed tothem

7th We believe the doctrine of atonement for sin by the sufferings and death of our Lord Jesus Christ

8th We believe all such as are born of the spirit of God are kept by the power of God through faith unto eternal Salvation

9th We believe that good works are the effects of the faith of Gods elect and follow being born of the spirit of God, and in this point of view are evidences of a gracious State

10th We believe that baptism and the Last Supper are ordinances of the gospel instituted by Jesus Christ and none but those who profess faith in Christ and obedience to his will are fit subjects for either

11th We believe immersion according to the Scriptures and apostolic practice to be the only proper mode of Baptism

12th We believe the sanctity of the first day of the week or Lords day ought to be observed and spent in the public or private worship of God; and that we should abstain from our worldley Concerns except in cases of necessity and mercy

13th We believe in the resurrection of the body both of the just and unjust and that God will Judge the world in righteousness by that man whome he hath apointed

14th We believe that the righteous will forever abide in the peaceful presence of God their redeemer; and his pardoning grace and forgiving love to be the theme of their song; while the wicked shall remain in everlasting torment

Rules of Decorum

On an experimental knowledge of the above mentioned fundamental truths and conformity of life and conversation there to. We build and establish our Spiritual unior and fellowship with each other and for the maintainance of peas[peace] and good order among our Selves we agree to submit to the following rules of Disciplin

1st Not to forsake the assembling of our Selves to gether but constantly to attend our Stated meetings without providentially hindered

2nd That it is the duty of The Church to make strict enqiry of persons proposing to unite in membership into an experience of a work of grace in their hearts this soundness in the faith the uprightness of their lives and Conversation; except members from other Churches they are sufficiently recommended for that purpose But the Church shall in no case be prevented from asking any proper questions and finally rejecting such members as it should be thought proper

3rd That a gospel church hath power or keys of government within herself and privilege of exercising her own disciplin without being Subject to the controll of any presbytery or council what ever

4th In all matters of trepass or private grief wherein one member trespasses against or agrieves another the rule prescribed in the 18th chapter of matthew is to be strictly observed and should any member being guilty of any public transgression he is not permited to bring it to the church without first labouring with Said member with whome he is distressed and when brought in order before the Church if the offending member neglect to hear the church She hath a right to admonish reprove rebuke or finally to excommunicate any such guilty impenitent offenders. And upon any such persons giving satisfactory tokens of a godley repentance to received them again in the fellowship

5th To bear each one his part as the Lord Shall proper him in defraying the temporal expenses of The Church

6th That Church members carefully avoid going to law with each other on any pretense whatever without leave from the Church

7th Not to remove our residence to any distant part without applying to the Church for dismission

8th That Church business except receiving and dismissing members be done by a majority and the minority ought peaceably to submit

9th Any member being distressed with another and divulge it to any other person previous to his laboring with Said member with whom he is distressed shall fall immediately under the sensure of the Church

Rules of Decorum

1st Meeting shall be opened closed with prayer

2nd A moderator and clerk shall be chosen by the sufferage of the Church who shall continue to act until others be appointed

3rd Onley one person shall speak at a time who shall arise and address the moderator when he is about to make his speech

4th No proposition or motion shall be made and debated unless made by one member and Seconded by another

5th All motions and propositions shall be decided on as they are proposed nor shall any new motion be made and taken up while there is one undetermined before the Church unless the first be postponed or refured

6th Any motion made and seconded may be withdrawn by the person making such motion before any decision is had on it

7th No person shall speak more than twice to any question [two words crossed out totally] without ???? from the Church nor more than once until all that choos to speak hav spoken once

8th Every member in debate ought to be Careful not to reflect on the one that spoken before him but to confine himself to the subject in hand and if he shall wander from the question he shall be called to order by the moderator or any other member and any member called to order shall immediately take his seat unless permitted to explain him self

9th Each member shall keep his seat while the moderator puts a question which he shall do standing

10th The moderator shall be entitled to the same privileg of speech as another member provided the seat be filled

11th No member shall have the privileg of whispering or laughing in time of public speech

12th No member shall evacuate his seat in time of Church meeting without leave of the Church

Meeting of the new harmony Church of united Baptis held the the third Saturday in July 1846 The Church being organized proceeds to business as follows

1st The Church unanimously calls brother Mathias Cline to take the pastorial care of this Church during the ensuing year which call he accepts

2nd The church takes up for consideration until our next meeting the propriety of choosing a deacon

3rd The church sais she will apply to the Platte River Association of united Baptis for membership at her next session

Meeting of the new harmony Church of united Baptis held the third Saturday in September after servis the Church proceeds to business as follows

1st The reference from last meeting relative to choosing a deacon called for and taken up where upon brother Edward Snyder is chosen deacon of this Church

2nd The letter to send to the Association called for read and received and the messengers appointed to bear the same as follows Creed Herring Abraham Christie James Christie and Edward Snyer in Case of failure James Crook

3rd The Church appropriates one dollare for printing her minutes

2nd received Brother Nathan read [Reed] and sister winny read [Winny Reed] his wife by letter

3rd the Church agrees to hold one half of her meetings at the Union School house adjourned till to Morrow morning 11 ock from thence till meeting in course

3rd the Church appoints her Clerk to see Brethern George Herring and sister Mary ann Herring and request them to attend at her next meeting

4th The Church request Brother Snider see Brother John Herring and request him to attend next meeting

5th it is Motioned and Seconded that brother reed be Called to take the pastorial Care of the Church

5th the Church Calls brother reed to take to preach to them the ensuing year

6th persuant to adjournment the Church met at 11 ock Sunday morning and received Sister Mary Mitchel then [7th] adjourned till Meeting in course

4th the Church takes up for consideration the propriety of Contributing such Sum as She may think proper for the support of the gospel to destitute Churches belonging to this association and refers the same till next meeting

5th the Church adjourns till to Morrow morning 11 ock from thence thence (sic) till Meeting in Course

4th The Church agrees to Commune at her next meeting till tomorrow morning 11 ock from thence til in course

2nd The Brothers and Sisters from Sister Churches invited to Seats with us

3rd At the request of Brother Edward E Snider a letter of dismission is granted him and his wife  The Church agrees to dismiss all to morrow morning 11 ock from thence till meeting in course.

After prayer by Brother Fields the Church organised for business

1st the Church agrees to Call Elder M Cline to preach to them the ensuing year

2nd the Church appoints her Clerk to prepare a letter to send to the association and present the same at our next meeting.  whereuppon the following the Brethern were appointed to bare the Same to the Association Aug? Elder N Reed Creed Herring and Edmund Miller--the same brethern Also to Bare the request the Church To Brother Cline

3rd at the request of Brother Abram Christie he is released from the Dutie of Clerk

4th the Church reconsiders her act in regard to holding her meetings at Maulden School house and agrees to Hold her meetings altogether at Union Schol house

5th At the request of Brother Abram Christie a letter of dismission is granted him and his wife

6th At the request of Brother James Crook a letter of dismission is granted him and his wife

7th The Church agrees to dismiss till to morrow morning 11 ock. from thence till meeting in course

After Praise and Praier by Elder N Reed the Church proceeded to business

1st by calling Elder Reed to the chair

2nd all in peace

3rd opened a door for members none came

4th the Associational letter was then presented by Elder Reed read and rec’d and seventy five cents made up to send to the Association

5th then adjourned till to Morrow morning 11 oclock thence till Meeting in corse

After Divine servis by Elders N Reed and J Brawley the church proced to business Elder Reed in the chair

1st invited visiting Brethering to seats

2nd fellowship called for all in peace

3rd opened a door and reserved by Expearence for Baptism Brs James Goodwin Andrew Mitchel Lias Mitchel and sister Rachel E. Reed and agreed that Baptism be attended to on the morrow

4th the Church agrees to Commune at her next meeting then adjourn till 11 ocl oclk to morrow

Lords day the church met acording to a ?Janassient [Jansenient?] after Preeching by the Elders Brawley and Cline opened a door up and rec’ed Br Wm Baskett and sister Mary Baskett his wife by letter it being raining it was a greed that Baptism be referred till to Morrow and that we have meeting to morrow at Br Sniders

[Meeting of the New Harmony Church of United Baptist -] Monday the 23rd met ucaristy to agreement after Divine servis by Elders Reed and Brawley opened a door and refured Brother George May by letter then went to the water and baptised the four candadates refured on Saterday

6th The church appoints brother Cline to chose the committee The committee chosen were Creed Herring Edward Snider Israel Christie Anderson Neal & Seth Dunn

7th The Church requests Brother Joseph Cline to act as Deacon

8th The Church requests Brother James Atteberry to act as Deacon

No more business comeing before the church she dismisses untill meeting in Course

1st The committee appointed appointed to select a place to build a meeting house report that they have selected three cites which they submit to they church

2nd The report of the committee is received and the comittee discharged

3rd After some investigation the church drops one of the cites and postpones a dicision on the other two untill next meeting.

No other business comeing before the church she dismisses until metting in course

Meeting of the New Harmony Church of United Baptists third Saturday in August [1854]

After Services by Bros Neal & Wallen the church proceeded to business

1st The refference from last meeting concerning a place to build a house taken up & the church selects a place on Wm Gartins land on the North State road 3/4 of a mile east of Malden

2nd The church appoints the clerk to prepare a letter to send to the assosiation & present it to church

at her next meeting for inspection

3rd The church by nomination sends Brethren Neal Israel Christie Deakins & Snider to bear the letter to the Assosiation

4th The church says she will insert in her letter a request to the assosiation to divide

5th The church says she will call a preacher to preach to her twelve months Elder Cline is chosen

6th The church says she will give Bro Cline five dollars per month

7th The church agrees to pay Bro Christie three dollars for getting wood and making fires

8th The church appoints Bro Christie to see Bro Cline and inform him of the act of the church in calling him to preach to them & ascertain if he will accept or not

2nd the church agrees to appoint Delegates to the association and also to appoint some one of the brethren to write a letter [to] the association

3rd the church says she will elect them by private ballot. Brethren Neal Christie Cline & Kirtley are appointed Delgaits & brother Kirtley to write the letter

4th the church says she will hold a protracted meeting commencing the Friday before the 3rd Saturday in October

5th that brother Price be invited to attend with brother Cline at said meeting

6th Sister Sarah Ann Price is granted a letter of dismission
