MT. MORIAH: THE FIRST SIXTY YEARS
1842-1902
"MT. MORIA" FIRST CHURCH IN BUCHANAN COUNTY

"Probably the first church in Buchanan County was the Mount Moria. It was a log structure, near Fraser."
Ref: Hazel A. Faubion, Tales Of Old ‘St. Joe’ And The Frontier Days, p. 128.

1840 REV. CAPLES HELPS FOUND MT. MORIAH CHURCH NEAR GOWER, MISSOURI

"Among the momentums of Missouri that were a blessing to the world in a way of molding characters is found the Historic Church of Mount Moriah. Early in the 1840s, of frontier life, God put into the heart and mind of an eloquent minister, Rev. Caples, to preach the word to souls thirsting for righteousness.

"He preached in homes, in school house, and in the shady forests. This was during the great camp-meeting period, some of which were held near this place, and were times of great refreshing from the Lord. Brother Caples was a great worker in these meetings as pastor and Presiding Elder. He did much for the cause of Methodism and won many souls to the Master."
Ref: Mt. Moriah History read to the church on Sunday, July 13, 1902.

"Two years before [the organization of the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church in 1842] services had been held in homes of members."
Ref: St. Joseph News-Press, April 20, 1958.

MT. MORIAH ONE FIRST CHURCHES CONSTRUCTED IN BUCHANAN COUNTY

"Mount Moria {notice the spelling] was among the first church edifices constructed in the county. It was a rude log house, and was located near Frazer [notice the spelling]. The organization is still in a flourishing condition. Among the early expounders of the Word at this church was George W. Rich, John C. Davis, John Stone and John Ellis."
Ref: The History Of Buchanan County, p. 346. Published 1881.

SLAVES BUILD CHURCH

"The first Mount Moriah Church was a log cabin erected at the site of the present cementary. The logs and slave labor were furnished by Dugan Fouts Sr. The slaves felled the trees and hewed the logs, the records show, and put them in position as walls."
Ref: St. Joseph News-Press, April 20, 1958.

"It is said that Brother Fouts furnished most of the logs for the log church which stood near the graveyard and had his negroes hew them ready to be placed into position in the walls."

Ref: Frank C. Tucker, The Methodist Church In Missouri 1798-1939, p.87. Published 1966.

1917 ANOTHER METHODIST CHURCH NEAR FRAZIER

"A mile south [of Frazier] was a Methodist church, disbanded in 1917. It was across from the Frazier Cemetery" Quoted from article in Young At Heart, St. Joseph News-Press, Friday, October 24, 1997 written by Thelma Walkup. Doubtless this Methodist Church was not related to the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church. No date was given in the article as to when the church near Frazier began.

After the Methodist Church near Frazier was closed it continued to be used occasionally for funeral services. The church later looked as though it was ready to fall in.
Ref: Mrs. Louise Guithrie (November 15, 1997).

ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IN FRAZIER

At one time there was a Roman Catholic Church in Frazier. It was located across from where Mr. and Mrs. Marion Isaacs live (1997). It was a small building as there were few roman Catholics who resided in the community. Services were held in the afternoon.
Ref: Mrs.Louise Guthrie (November 15, 1997).

METHODIST CHURCH IN GOWER

At one time there as a Methodist Church in Gower, Mo. It was located on the street behind Main Street. After the church no longer existed it was used as a opera house and the as a kind of community center.
Ref: Mrs.Louise Guthrie (November 15, 1997).

One member, Mr. Gene Holmes, stated it had also been used as a warehouse and that it had been a Presbyterian Church, not a Methodist.
Ref: Conversation with Eugene K. Holmes (November 18, 1997).

At the Mt. Moriah U.M.W. meeting on November 19, 1997 Maisy Stevenson suggested there may have been both a Presbyterian Church as well as a Methodist Church. The answer to the mystery is found in a Gower newspaper [which Mrs. Louise Gutherie has] published in 1903. Pictures and articles in the paper state there were four churches in Gower at that time. There was a Presbyterian Church, a Missionary Baptist Church, a Christian Church as well as a Methodist Church.

MT. MORIAH CEMETERY

The Mount Moriah Cemetery is located south of the present Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church building. It has not been used for several years. Years ago the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church was located near it. It was difficult to reach. Members of the John Diddy, Jef Rays, Trotter, and Walkup families are buried there.

Part of the history read stated, "Our church now has electric lights and have installed an oil heater. Our church has had the lamp on the side of wall with reflectors, then later swinging coal oil lamps were hung; changing to chandelier lamps, gas lights and now electric light. Mt. Moriah when first built had a balcony and outside door for the Negroes during the Civil War. The services were sometimes molested and sometime loyal Union men protected it from invaders. the church has gone through many changes as the balcony was removed, a wind storm or cyclone partly unroofed our building. We have changed the two front doors to one entry and porch and seating is changed from two aisles to just one aisle." Rev. T. P. Mohr was pastor.

1990 CHURCH STRUCK BY HIGH WINDS

A suspected tornado or strong wind struck the church grounds on July 8, 1990, the night before Vacation Bible School was to begin. Vacation bible School was able to carry on.

1990 SQUIRRELS ATTEND CHURCH

Weather has not been the only facet of nature that Mt. Moriah has encountered. Over a period of Sundays several years ago, members of the congregation noticed a foul odor near the rear of the sanctuary. The smell was determined to be coming from behind the bookcase located to the north of the main entry. When the bookcase was moved, the flattened, dried remains of two squirrels were found hanging on the wall. Evidently the squirrels had run behind the bookcase and tried to go up the wall, but the wall was not perfectly straight and the squirrels became trapped.

The culprit could not be found; but the next week a corner of a new window had been chewed. Other damage was found in the basement and the perpetrator turn out to be a rabbit.

Encounters with raccoons and snakes in the basement have also occurred during the course of Mt. Moriah’s history. There are probably other such stories that could be told by members of the congregation over the years.
