A BIOGRAPHY BY ELLEN BONSTEIN [AUNT NELL] DAUGHTER OF JOHN AND MARY BOVARD BONSTEIN

About eighty years ago in a little village in north-eastern Pennsylvania the subject of this sketch was born. [MARY BOVARD] She was the ninth child in a family of thirteen [?] children- not unusual number in those days. This family, as is so commonly the case in this country, was of very mixed ancestry. The father, [ALEXANDER BOVARD] born of French Huguenot descent on the paternal side and of Scot-Irish on the maternal side. The girl's mother was of the pro-[?] German Lutheran Stock, which has furnished the population of this state with such a substantial element. The inherited some of the best qualities of the races which she represented. From her mother [Susannah Brobst] she inherited calmness of judgement, stability of character, and a broad sympathy from her father, she inherited great generosity [?], a keen sense of humor, and a gay buoyancy and hoepfulness of dispostion that were to serve her in good stead in the years to come.

...and had enjoyed a life of comfortable plenty until the girl, Mary, was about ten years old. When, after having lost the most of his property the father died, leaving the mother to struggle along with her numerous family as best she might with the aid of the older sons.

The family had been one of considerable intellectual attainment, many of its members having belonged to the professional class and Mary had a longing to live up to the family traditions in this respect and to receive an education. She was obliged to be content, however, with the limited course of study provided by the public schools of the time, this was supplemented with a thorough training at home in the domestic arts FOR HER MOTHER WAS A NOTED HOUSEKEEPER.

When eighteen years of age, Mary, commenced to learn the trade of a tailoress with the aim of carring her own living; but Father did not intend that this young woman should spend her life in the mechanical occupation of turning out one garment after another. In the shop where she worked, there worked also a tall, serious man, nine years her senior. It is an old saying that opposite's attract each other and this quiet, reserved man soon found that when the vivacious Mary was in the shop, life took on a rosier aspect and that when she was absent, it became dull and un-interesting. Every young man has the picture of a future home treasure up in the cornor of his brain and the man began to picture Mary's bright presence as the center of attraction in this dream home of his. In the following year his dream came true and the pair established their home in a flourishing young town in the center of hte anthracite region of Pennsylvnaia. The family grew and soon there was a household of growing children requiring the attention and care of the parents. It was at this point in her life that I came to know this mother and to appreciate her.

Her life during the time in which I knew her was plain and simple, spent for the most in the restricted circle of her home. Much joy entered into her life, but still more of sorrow... Her experience's were such as fall to the common lot, but, they were met in an uncommon way. She was a woman of great physical stability, some of which she seemed ablr to impart to others by her presence among them, but [none] more remarkable then her.

I would like to thank LoAnn for sharing this Biography of our Great-Great-Grandmother. MARY JANE BOVARD-BONSTEIN, It is such a treasure, just like she must have been.

Lewis & Mahala Lett. She was b. 6 Aug 1849 Jennings Co, Indiana, d. 12 Mar 1928 Wamego, Kansas.

Note: Letter from Selena to Minnie Bonstein March-20-1896, Stockdale, Kansas

Dear Sister Minnie:

It is with deep sorrow and heartache that I write to inform you--your brother Will died yesterday morning at half past three o'clock. The funeral services were held in the Methodest Church at two o-clock today. A large procession of friends and neighbors followed his body to the grave.

He was taken sick the ninth of March with Pnemonia. We tried to do everything in our power for him. We had two doctors and telegraphed for the third but he died before he reached him.

He hoped he could recover until near the last but from the beginning of his illness he had very littl hope himself. He suffered very much during his sickness, but recognized everyone allmost to the last. he was delirious during the first part of his illness and talked constantly of going home to his mother. Talked often to his Brother Jack. He intended to come home this spring to visit his mother and brothers and sisters but as he became weaker he gave up all hope of seeing them again. The day before he died he said "God Bless my dear old Mother, I shall never see her again in this world."

He said his deepest regret in leaving this world was that he could not see his mother first. He expressed great regret that he had notlived a better life but said he was very tired and suffered so much and was glad to give up the struggle and be at rest.

I wished to telegraph and inform you of his dangerous illness but he would not consent. He said "it will grieve my dear mother to know I am so sick and she cannot come and see me, so do not write until I am better or at rest."

I write to you Thinking you can break the news gently to his mother. I saved her a lock of his hair that I cut from his head after he was in his coffin, you see it is getting a little gray. Almost everyone that looked at him in his coffin spoke of the beautiful smile and look of peace on his face. We trust he is now with the Saviour. Our hearts are acking with sorrow but we bow in submission to the Will of the Lord!

Yours in Sorrow

Mrs. S. A. Bonstein

HENRY SIMMONS BORN IN ENGLAND MARRIED SARAH RICHARDS ABT 1840, SHE WAS BORN ABT 1820 CORNWALL, ENGLAND [This may not be the right one, Gwen did the research on the Edwards for me, but she could not find help with Henry, Thanks anyway Gwen Gierson] There are several Sarah Richards in England so I am looking at 1861 Boacastle, Cornwall, England with Sarah age 1820. David is said to have been in Paris, New York before 1795, though he may have returned to Connecticut for short periods. We find vague references to him as a first settler in Paris. Susanna appears to have been the servant girl "Susan Buche" who came to New England in 1637 in the ship "Hercules" from Dover, Canterbury, England with Henry Bachelor [a brewer] and his wife Martha [Wilson]. Susan was possibly a sister of "John Buche" also a servant tot he Bachelor family.

According to Essex County Court Records, after Susanna came out of her apprentinceship, Henry Bachelor sued her for slander, but lost the suit. She retaliated by suing him for detaining her baggage. Her son David would later marry into the Batchelor [Batchelder] family.

Thomas married Second, SARAH AYERS LAMSON b. abt 1625 England

Child is:

1. Timothy Hartshorn b. 23 Feb 1662 Reading, Middlesex, Mass,

In 1650 Thomas received a grant of 10 acres; in 1655 a lot in Jeremiah Swain's Meadow; in 1665, a lot north of the Ipswich River, and in 1666 land in the Great Swamp.

He was Constable from 1658 to 1672.

He was a Reading Selectman from 1661 thru 1667. In 1662, he was one of 20 members who paid a dog-whipper and in 1672 it was voted to hang any dog whose owner refused to pay the dog-whipper. [When foxes were hunted for bounty, the tail of the fox was nailed to the church door as proof of capture. The dogs, attacted [attracted] by the tails, often disrupted church services, so the dog-whipper was employed to keep them away.]

In 1677, Massachusetts state records have a petition from Reading of which Thomas is a signer. He is listed as being a juror during the court held at Hampton on 9 October 1677. He was old during the time of KING PHILIP'S WAR but was a Sergeant in the Reading Militia Company in 1679.

After Susannah's death, he married SARAH AYERS LAMSON, widow of William Lamson, who had eight minor children: John [who served on a witchcraft jury in 1692, Sarah, Samuel, Pheobe, Mary, Hannah, Nathaniel & Joseph. Sarah's brothers opposed the marriage complaining that William's property had not been valued high enough and his children's rights not properly secured. Accordingly, Thomas made over as security his house and homestead of fifteen acres in Reading, and bounded by lands of James Pike and Walter Fairfield and the common lands of Reading, which satisfied the Judge of Probate.

The Will of Thomas Hartshorn, dated 26 Oct 1681, is in fair condition in Middlesex County Courthouse. No. 10545. It is very brief. The son Thomas is mentioned, perhaps because he is the eldest; Benjamin was named executor and had the homeplace, evidently by previous agreement; daugher Susanna received valuable keepsakes. The others are not mentioned at all...

Thanks Trish

She is getting back to me to Clarify the Davis line.

This is what I have so far on my dad; anyone with any info, it sure would be appreciated.

Bill was 5' 7" tall, blue eyes that just twinkled with oneryness, a smile that would make anyone's heart melt, and a beautiful thick head of hair, and a personality that was so cute. He was alot of fun and loved life. women and song.... He was very soft spoken, but wasn't much of a talker. He was a very hard working man, the biggest hands I ever saw on anyone so far, his pinky finger was a size 13, he was a very strong man, physically and willfully. I never realized until years after he was gone, that he had told me alot of things about himself. I thought it was just an old man talking, not knowing what to say. Now, what I remember, I cherish.
