THE BITTING BURIAL GROUND

1857

1000 Greenway Terrace, Kenhorst, Pa, Berks County.

A Personal Note

I came across the information of the Bitting cemetery at the Berks County Historical Society. The article, which has no author and written around 1955, says at 631 Minor Street here in Reading, Pa, "is a broken marble slab used as a step in the sidewalk inscribed "Bitting Graveyard." My collogues and I drove there and found where 631 was is now a parking lot and all the sidewalks have newer cement sidewalks.

We went on to Greenway Terrace in Kenhorst. After driving through a street of well kept single homes with driveways, we finally stopped and ask a woman sitting on her front porch enjoying the unusal warm December weather.

She asked not to be identified, said the cemetery was next door to her. She took us over and the house on the property is a bungalo type home. It had just been sold and the new owners had not moved in yet.

There are no headstones, they were removed years ago. Our informant told us there are bodies also buried under the sidewalk and they cemented right over some of the headstones. On the house is a paper from the Berks County Preservation Society stating there are bodies burried on the property. Picture below. Our informant said, "When we bought our house we didn't know there were bodies buried next door. I kept seeing an old man walking through my house nodding and smiling at me. One minute he was there and then he was gone...."

Friends Meeting House in Exeter Township.

In 1718, members of the English Friends from North Wales in Philadelphia County, settled in Oley Township.

Meeting were held in the homes of George Boone Sr. and Anthony Lee.

In 1737, a log Meeting House was built. In 1759, a stone building was erected.

Personal Note: On a Fall day in 1999, we were at the Friends Meeting House taking pictures of the cemetery. A car drove up and a man named Ted Stokes asked if we were ever inside the Meeting House. He unlocked the door and let us in.

Mr. Stokes said the Meeting House didn't changed much since the Boone and Lee Families went there in the 1700's.

Inside the Meeting House was vary dark and damp even though Mr. Stokes turned on the lights. He said they open the shutters during the meetings.

The first interment in the Exeter Meeting burying ground was that of John Hughes who died Oct. 10, 1736 at the age of 84.

By 1817, the burying ground was filled. As no additional land could be purchased, ground was hauled in and filled to a depth of four feet and a second tier of graves was begun. This is the reason there are no headstones or markers on the graves.

The Kirby Cemetery

The Kirby Cemetery

Located in Maidencreek Township, Berks County, Pa.

In 1998 the area was hit hard by tornadoes. Only the stone wall of the cemetery was damanged. Update 2010: In 1934 the graves to the front of the graveyard were dug up and what remains could be moved were moved inside further, and the front wall was moved back two feet to make room for the road. The back and sides of the graveyard are original. The re internment was under the supervision of Stanley Kirby heir along with Walter Christ funeral home. By that time the wooden caskets had decomposed and many of the remains were not totally intact. It is probable that some remains remained under the road.

Thanks to my collogue, Lewissa Huber for the pictures.
