Jonas Squire -- Mary Jones

Jonas Squire died 27 April 1841 at Hatherleigh, Devon at the age of 43. He was a yeoman of nearby Petrockstow. He left a widow, Mary (Jones) Squire, six children, and one unborn child. Where was he born and who are his parents and ancestors?

Jonas Squire, yeoman of Petrockstow, born abt 1798, died 27 April 1841, Hatherleigh, Devon. He married 18 Aug 1829, Monkokehampton, Devon to Mary Jones, daughter of John Jones and Elizabeth Abell. She was born about 1800-1805 and died in Illinois (maybe 1877?). Their children:
(1) Elizabeth b. 29 Oct 1829 ? -- m. Thomas Davy or a Taylor???
(2) Mary, b. abt 1826 (on 1870 Logan Co. Ill census), maybe married a Taylor; our notes show she married John Davy who married a second time (Mary Brown) who had a son Robert. John Davy died 1882 and Mary remarried and Robert took the Bolton name.
(3) William (on 1870 & 1900 Logan Co. Ill census) b. April 1832 Devon to Mary F. and had a Sarah and Elizabeth J. (�Lizzie J.�)
(4) Thomas (a Thomas is on 1870 Mercer Co Ill w/Elizabeth and children John, Jane, Elizabeth A, and Fanny, but apparently not this Thomas -- our notes indicate Thomas in 1894 of Princeton, Franklin Co, KIS, d. 20 Sept 1901, Ottowa, KS, wife �Aunt Hannah� with children Thomas Marion, d. Sept 1895 of Brights Disease; Willie, Lucinda, Ruben Wilkinson (who moved to Bandon, OR to be near Myrtle Davy Wion and Rosa Philpott relatives), Frank and Richard Clay.
(5) Jonas, bapt 20 May 1838, died young,
(6) Grace, born 5 Jan 1840 [our line] married William Palmer DAVY, (our line)
(7) Sarah born after her father�s death, bap 22 Aug 1841, d. 1874? Menard Co., Ill.
Our records also indicate a Jane who married a Hamlin - no other information.

Jonas would have been born about 1798. He is listed as a yeoman on his death certificate, which also indicates he died of a brain injury. Jonas was a popular Squire name and several are found in the records, so it has been difficult to sort out who is who.

Grace Squire came to the USA in 1854; family notes give immigration via Canada 1856 or age 16.
Grace married 20 Sept 1860 at Middleton, Illinois to William Palmer DAVY. See DAVY.

The 1860 Logan Co., Illinois, US census shows: Thomas Squires 30, Wm. Squires 25, Mrs. Squires 60, Grace Squires 18, Sarah Squires 20, all born England. The 1870 Logan Co., Illinois, US census shows: William Squire 37, Mary Squires 28, Sarah Squires 1, Elizabeth J. Squires 6/12, Mary Squires age 65; Thomas age 38 is in Mercer Co. ILL with his wife Elizabeth 35 (also born in England) and children: John 12, Jane 8, Elizabeth A. 4, Fannie 2 all born Illinois.

Jonas Squire married Mary Jones at Monkokehampton, Devon, on 18 Aug 1829. Jonas died 27 April 1841 leaving her with six children and one unborn child. On the 1841 census they are: Elizabeth 12, Mary 10, William 9, Thomas 6, Jonas 3, Grace 2. Sarah was born after his death. Family notes also indicate one other child: Jane. Petrockstow church records include: Jonas [son] bapt. 20 May 1838, Grace bapt. 2 Feb 1840, Sarah Ann, bapt 22 Aug 1841 and Jonas [father] age 44 buried 30 April 1841.
