The following is an excerpt from an email by Susan Leininger, an avid Breitenbucher
researcher. (See sources for full email contents)
[5/14/02] Quote:
......... Johann Michael Breitenbucher (1775 Birlenbach - 1834 Yates Co. NY)
and his wife Elizabeth Wanner (1778 Alsace - 1830 Yates Co. NY) were the parents
of six boys. These are the six who are mentioned in the Holmes Co. to 1985 (with
unfortunately the wrong parentage) and in the letter/history that Ron and Lynn
Schneider have that was written by (???) [Note: Susan is referring to the 1981
document: THE BREITENBUCHER FAMILY TREE IN AMERICA compiled and edited by: Mary
Elizabeth (Betty Breitenbucher) & Elmer W. Stitzlein.]
Johann Michael aka Michael was the son of George Michael Breitenbucher and
Maria Barbara Schweickhart. He was the brother of the Magdalena Breitenbucher
who married Philipp Heinrich Koehler (they were the parents of the Henry Koehler
who settled in Holmes Co. OH). Thus the Henry Koehler and George Breitenbucher
(husband of Margaret Ohleyer) who were in Holmes Co. were first cousins.
Michael and Elizabeth Wanner Breitenbucher arrived in NYC on 31 May 1830 along
with their sons John Adam and Christian. Unfortunately there are only about
6 passenger lists in total that survive from the rest of the summer of 1830 for
NYC (compared to the hundreds that they should have) so I doubt that we'll know
just when the other 2 brothers, George and Jacob, immigrated. Francis Louis
Breitenbucher and wife Margaret Hey (and their children) were also all on the
same ship as his older brother Michael. They also ended up in Holmes Co. after
a stay in Ontario Co. NY.
Michael and Elizabeth Wanner's children. Again I have seen these birth records
on the LDS films. The birth dates for Jacob and George as compared to Holmes
Co. sources of info stand up to these dates.
Michael born 16 Oct 1799 Birlenbach, died before 1863 (location unknown);
married Barbara Esch in 1829 in Hunspach.
Henry born 19 Nov 1801 Birlenbach. I last found him in 1833 in Hunspach,
witnessing the birth of Michael's daughter Barbara. Henry's occupation was noted
as a Royal Guardsman, and he lived in Strasbourg. (This is the Barbara who later
married George Ungerer; she died shortly after they immigrated to the US and
settled in Holmes Co. in 1868). Actually I take that back. I sighted Henry
again in 1838 at the birth of his nephew Bernard Breitenbucher (son of Michael)
again in Hunspach. He was then a Gend'arme (some type of soldier, policeman,
etc.) living in Wissembourg.
Christian born 25 January 1804 Birlenbach, died 29 Sept 1892 Attica, Wyoming
Co. NY; buried Orangeville. Married Marguerite Glor/Clor
***George born 19 April 1807 Birlenbach, died 2 January 1882 Knox Twp. Holmes
Co. OH. Married Margaret Ohleyer b. 21 Dec 1816 Hoffen, died 9 Feb 1879 Holmes
Co. Daughter of George Ohleyer and Barbara Weimer.
Jacob born 3 April 1810 Birlenbach, died 7 Oct 1866 Holmes Co. Married Margaret
Herman (daughter of Henry Herman and Magdalena Koehler) c1836-7 probably in Potter
NY. Magdalena Koehler was the older sister of the Henry Koehler who settled
in Holmes Co.
John Adam Breitenbucher born 26 April 1814 Birlenbach, died c.27 Oct 1899
Bennington, Wyoming Co. NY. Married Emily ______
----------------------------------------------
Perhaps it is because John Adam and Christian lived in Wyoming Co. near the
Dellenbach-Breitenbuchers that they were taken to be children of that couple.
Whatever the rationale, it is incorrect!
---------------------------------------------- End Quote He was married to
Elisabeth Wanner (daughter of Christian Wanner and
Anna Maria Heiknel or Higuenelle) on 1 May 1798 in Birlenbach, Bas Rhin,
France. Elisabeth Wanner
(14)(15)
(16)(17) was born on 22 Dec
1778 in Alsace, France. She immigrated on 31 May 1830 to New York City. She
died on 13 Sep 1830 in Yates Co. NY. She was buried in Shuman Cemetery, Potter,
Yates Co., N.Y.. .
