.......The earliest Breitenbucher that I have seen is Christian/Christoph Breitenbucher (born about 1695) who settled in Birlenbach, Alsace when his regiment was stationed there. The only hint about his origin is that he was from Swabia, which included Stuttgart (I think). He and his wife, Anna Catherina Huber had a son named Johann Georg, a baker, who married Anna Catherina Guill. Beyond this, things get a little messy, and the data is incomplete. In my mind, I put the descendants into the East Coast and Midwest groups.

Johann Georg and Anna Catherina had 2 sons whose children came to the US. The oldest son, George Michel, and his wife, Marie Barbe Schweighard, founded the Midwest group. Their sons Johann Michael and Franz Ludwig/Louis Franklin, came to the US on the same ship in 1830. Two sons of Johann Michael and Marie Barbe (Johann George and Jacob) moved to Holmes County, Ohio. Ron and I are descended from this Johann George on our mother's side. Franz Ludwig's family also came to the Holmes County area. Ron and I are descended from Franz Ludwig's daughter, Magdalena, on our father's side! Franz Ludwig's son, George William, moved to Montana (I think). His descendants are also in Iowa and Missouri; Ken Johnson and Judy Scholler are descended from George William. Another son of Franz Ludwig died in the Civil War in Chattanooga.

The second son of Johann Georg and Anna Catherina, Johann Martin, founded the East Coast group. Johann Martin and his wife, Marie Barbe Weber, had two sons who came to the US: Jean Jacques and Philip Henri. They stayed in New York and changed their name to Broadbooks; sort of an Anglicized version of Breitenbucher. Susan Broadbooks is related to this branch of the family (by marriage). The Georgia Breitenbuchers descended from another son of Johnann Georg and Anna Catherina, Georges Frederick. Georges Frederick's grandson came, first to Buffalo NY, and then to Atlanta GA. Vaughann Blackshear is descended from this branch. ..................
