Notes for John Meeks

"John MEEKS, Jr. obtained 100 acres from John Sr. in 1762, which may have been actually in Edgecombe or along the Edgecombe Co. line. I believe this is the John MEEKS who on 10 D ec 1778 had a grant in Edgecombe on the Long Branch joining James DUPREE, Henry SUMRELL , John ELLIS and Owen CRAVEY. He signed by mark "X" unlike John Sr. who signed "". On 21 Aug 1780 John (X) MEEKS of Edgecombe sold to John ELLIS 125 acres joining Owen CRAVEY, and on 29 Dec 1783 he sold to John HICKS 170 acres joining James DUPREE (witnessed by Simon (X) ME EKS, James STOCKDALE, William JORDAN). This John appears to have died before the 1790 Censu s, although w e do not find a probate in Edgecombe (probably because the estate was settled in Pitt ). I suspect William MEEKS of Edgecombe inherited some of his land, and would suggest tha t John Jr . may have left the following sons: James, William, Simon."
