Obituary, Giebelhaus—

Katherine Giebelhaus nee Traudt, was born September 30, 1864, in Norka, Russia. There she received holy baptism and was confirmed in the Reformed church. In 1879 she came with her parents to the United States and located at Sutton, Nebr. In this city she also joined in holy matrimony with George Giebelhaus, February 7, 1884, by Rev. Bonekemper of Sutton. To this union were born nine children, two whom preceded their mother in death.

The deceased was a devoted mother to her family and a faithful Christian member of her church. She enjoyed good health until the latter years of her life, when age began to show the strain of life. On Saturday morning, April 19, at 1:40 a. m., she passed away at the age of 82 years, six months, and 19 days.

She leaves to mourn her aged widower, George Giebelhaus and seven children, John of Sutton; Mrs. Margaret Ellwanger, Conrad, Henry, and Mrs. H. G. Robb, Lincoln; Mrs. J. G. Roth, Fresno, Calif; and Mrs. Elvina Brady, Chicago, Ill. There are seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also one brother, Adam Traudt, of Sutton and one sister, Mrs. Anna Wolf.

Burial services were held Monday, April 21, at Sutton, from the First German Congregational church, Rev. E. Gackle, Crete, officiating. Interment was in the Sutton cemetery.

[Note from Tim Giebelhaus, 2003: the clipping has the number of grandchildren crossed out and nine written and the number of great grandchildren changed to six. John’s wife’s Bible and the census records (1920 and 1930) show the spelling of Elvina as Alvina. Census records from 1930 also show Mrs. H. G. Robb would be Freda. There is a note on what appears to be a family picture of the George Giebelhaus family that notes one person is Marie (Roth) Giebelhaus.]

William Volz was born August 11, 1881 in Balzer, Russia, the eighth child and sixth son of 11 children of Jonathan Volz and Anna Maria Bauer. Of this family only Mrs. John Giebelhaus and Mrs. Henry Huber survive, both of Sutton.

He migrated with his family to Sutton at the age of ten years in 1891. On January 25, 1904, he was married to Elizabeth Abel. To this union, four sons and one daughter were born in Sutton. They are Robert. W. Volz, Harold J. Volz, Fred E. Volz, Mrs. Henry Wolfe, and Lorenz N. Volz, who survived him in addition to his wife and 11 grandchildren.

The entire family moved to Portland Ore., in April 1925, and have remained in the vicinity since. Mr. Volz was a carpenter and cabine maker and retired in 1950.

While living in Sutton he was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church and director of the choir for many years until moving to Portland. Since that time he has been a member of First Evangelical Reformed Church and also an active member of the choir. Altogether he rendered his vocal talents for the Lord over 50 years in the tow churches. To his country he gave the services of three sons during World War II. One son is still in the service.

His steadfastness in his faith to the Lord made him a dear husband to his wife and a loving father to his children and beloved by all his grandchildren. His last words in his last hour with us was “Dear Lord Jesus, come and take me home.” After 76 years, 9 months, and 10 days, his Lord called him to his just reward, passing away May 21.
