The Gilbert family came to the new world in about 1720 and were known there as Gilbert dit Comtois, which loosely translates to Gilbert of the County. My first ancestral Gilbert immigrant was Louis Gilbert who was born Ste-Madeleine, Besancon, Franche County, France. It is not known the exact date of his arrival in New France. He married Marie Anne Jacques, the daughter of Louis Jacques and Antoinette Cardinal. This union has spawned many generations spread across the North American continent and likely the world. They have ties to the first permanent settlers in New France, who sailed with Robert Gifford and arrived at the Fort of Quebec, now Quebec City, in 1634. Please enjoy a look through the history and contact me if you have a connection.
