Executive Summary:

Some fantastic research by Barney Alvis Taylor, has us back to England with John Taylor, born in 1595. I've just begun studying Barney's work and gathering more documentation. For now, let's begin in Tennessee, Herring Taylor (1772-1820 to 1850) was born to Robert Taylor and Nancy Ann Herring in 1772, probably in Dobbs County, North Carolina.

Barney discovered that Herring inherited a huge estate in 1799. Barney also found that Herring was declared to be insolvent in 1809 in Montgomery County, Tennessee. Herring took his family to the territory that is now southern Illinois. Herring and his wife, Sallie Cotton Taylor flourished in what came to be known as "Taylor Hill" right next to "Webb's Prarie". You can see a graphical or textual descendancy report beginning with Robert Benjamin Taylor or explore the individual pages.

Our line comes from Herring's son, Jesse Taylor (1810-1890). Jesse reared Alvis Taylor (1840-1921), One of Alvis's boys, Cyrus D. Taylor (1861-1929) fathered my grandfather, Harry Earl Taylor (1885-1958). Harry left home when he was about 13, around 1898. He wound up in Hawaii as an Engineer for the Oahu Railway and Land Company. Harry Sr. met and married Helen Thomas Jones who was a nurse in Santa Cruz, California. The couple lived in Hawaii, having two children, Jeanne and Harry Earl Taylor, Jr.

After World War II, Harry, Jr. met my mother, Genvieve Yvonne Snyder, in Washington, DC. They had two children, Harry E. Taylor, III and me, Joan Buell Taylor Gillen.

Family Crest:

This is the Coat of Arms my dad, Harry E. Taylor, Jr., purchased, I've since read that it's the individual, not a family, that may be duly registered and entitled to bear the crest. Still, the colors are strong and it's possible that someone in our family once bore them.

If any relationship to the Zachary Taylor line exists, I, like, my late distant cousin, Barney Alvis Taylor (1946-1998 ) of Illinois, suspect it would have had to be in England before 1595,
