Lindsey H. English, 1805-1880
11th child of Elisha & Sarah Wharton English

The family Bible of Lindsey H. English is in the custody of Suzanne English Walker, great granddaughter of Warren English (the 4th child of Lindsey). According to Walker, the bible was published in 1832 by H & E Phinney's stereotype edition, Cooperstown, NY. In the front of the Bible is this inscription: Presented to Elisha English by his Father Lindsey H. English in 1880.*   Walker says the Bible was apparently handed down from Lindsay to his son Elisha, then maybe given to Warren (Elisha's brother), then to James Turney (Warren's son), then to her father John William English (son of James).

In the middle of the Bible, between the old and new testaments, is the page titled "Family Record." MARRIAGES are on the front of this page and BIRTHS on the back. Each section is divided into two columns. There is no page for death entries. Entries are entered in different handwriting and the color of the ink is different, some black, some brown, one in pencil. The few entries dated prior to 1832, of course, were not entered at the time the event occurred. Below are links to images of the actual pages and transcriptions.

Walker reports there was a piece of paper inserted between the pages of the Bible. The paper is a carefully prepared list of members of the Castelaw family. The listing was written on lined (very yellowed) tablet paper. Walker believes this may have been written by Josephine English Castelaw (daughter of Lindsey) because there are death dates for her husband and a child but no death date listed for her.
