DNA SURNAME LINES

The below SMITH descendant information is provided in conjunction with the surname Kinney, McKinney & Variations DNA Project. It appears that a "new" haplotype for the surname SMITH came into existence in 1844 in Butler County, KY, due to a false paternal event. A McK*nney was the likely biological father. Please read the background information at John R. Smith [stepson] of Michael Smith of Butler Co., Kentucky.

If John R. Smith was a stepson of Michael Smith, John's direct line male Smith descendants have different Y DNA than that of Michael Smith's direct line male descendants or Michael's other male Smith relatives.

Michael's biological children include several daughters and only one son. If that son has direct line male descendants who Y test, it should not be a surprise of the DNA does NOT match that of John R. Smith. Conversely, any direct line male descendant of John R. Smith who tests, should match John (and some McK*nneys) but will not match any earlier Smith haplotype

Furthermore, according to family tradition, John R. Smith may have fathered a child known as James R. Russ. If so, this was the beginning of a "new" haplotype for the surname RUSS and hence any RUSS directly line male descendants of this person will not match the Y DNA of any earlier RUSS line.

Note:
MICHAEL SMITH (Generation 1) m. 2nd Margaret Russ. No Smith issue. It is reported that after Michael died, Margaret Russ married an older man, also named Russ, who died shortly thereafter (no issue). Two years later, Margaret had a son by her stepson JOHN R. SMITH (1844-1902) who was named James R. Russ. Margaret had two other Russ children born out of wedlock (biological father not known) and later married a man named Hugh Foley.
